Hong Kong Disneyland Tips w/Kids

Well we went to Disneyland on Sept 3rd for the rehearsal day. We were so excited......and then DISAPPOINTED!

For those of you who have been, thought we could share some tips...

What you need:
Water,
Sun Block/Hat,
Comfortable Shoes

Get a FastPass for rides. This means you don't need to queue up for hours and can walk through when you return at the appointed time. You can only get a Fastpass every couple of hours. As we were a group of 4, we split up and got 2 Fastpasses for 2 different rides. I then realised, kids who sat with their parents on rides didn't need a ticket, so another adult was able to join us on the rides.

Any other tips??

How was the food there? Anything suitable for toddlers?

I think I read that there are something like 9 Chinese restaurants and only 1 Western restaurant, which even given the target audience of mainly mainlanders and locals seems a bit unbalanced. I would have thought a 70/30 split of Chinese to Western restaurants would be better.

While I've got nothing against Chinese food, I don't want to go to Disneyland just to eat food from a Maxims Chinese resaurant, which I can buy anywhere in HK.

Sorry for the off topic grumble, but this restaurant thing has been bugging me since I first read about it in the SCMP.

Thankfully, it will be another 3 years at least until I have to take my little one.

Not much food for kids -- atleast we did not spot anything that would appeal to our kid -- fish and chips etc.

The western place is essentially an overpriced McDonalds (better quality than McDs)....

We took some pasta along with us
 
Honestly i didn't pay too much attention to the kids food selection as we'd been warned that the queues would be long, so we decided to pack a lunch for D. We did grab a bite at the Starlight Diner, which is just burgers etc. Food was ok. Burgers $35 and $15 for drinks. We did see another western cafe, but didn't bother checking the menu as they had a queue of 15 waiting to be seated. There was also a food court, but like you we weren't up for Chinese food.

hi guys,

i went to disney twice 1st was the rehersal day it was pack and the 2nd was 15th sep which is a whole lot better. even though it's the first week of the opening everything is easier. There wasn't much of lining up only a couple of mins. If really decide to go try to make it on weekdays and should bring foods and snack for kids as it's not recommemdable for children and lots of water :missingto
 
Have all of you get your bags checked at the gate?

Hi, everybody,

I haven't been there yet. I'd like to ask all of you who've been there. Have all of you get your bags checked at the gate, I mean for food and water? I've seen on TV twice people get their bags checked at the gate, the first time the comment was Disney was checking them if they brought their own food and water, which was forbidden. The second time was just two days ago, without comment. I've learnt water is allowed, but not juice. Am I correct? What kind of humiliation is this? My parents have been to Disneyland in L.A. and Tokyo, I've been to the one in Tokyo. None of us get our bags checked or forbidden to bring food or water. If they are checking for guns I won't mind. Even the customs at the HK airport don't bother to check our bags. Please share your thoughts.
 
our experience!!

We went to Disneyland last weekend and must say the kids had a blast! Taking into consideration it was a Sunday the park was not overly crowded like we were told it might be. Lines were not longer than 30 mins the max. The cup/saucer was 5 mins wait. Ample stalls with lots of water,fresh juices,ice creams and popcorn. As for the food....i hv a 10 mth old and a 3 yr old whom i took with me....and didnt want to risk not finding food. So we packed lots of sandwiches,cookies,juice cartons, and of course my baby's pureed stuff along with her formula. I think my bag was so full of junk cos i had heard so much abt not being able to find food. Yes they checked our bags but they didnt say anything abt not being able to tk the food in. The guys at the entrance were quite friendly and smiley and were digging into my bag and i said ' all my kids stuff' and let us pass without any hassle. As for the food available...there was room available in all the restos. i think this time we packed food but next time i wont bother cos the kids end up eating so much junk inside that they dont want to eat the food we took. plus the whole excitement for them of eating mickey mouse shaped rice cakes and mickey mouse ice cream! i didnt mind! we had a great time and my son tells me everyday 'can we go again mama to disneyland?' even my 10 mth old was fine. she slept in her stroller when she needed to and i took her on the dumbo, cup and saucer,merry go round, the 3 d movie and the lion king show! i was so worried abt what she was going to do. but it was great and we look fwd to going again. i had heard such bad reviews from friends and was so nervous abt our visit but came back so happy and positive and recommend it to anyone. Thanks very much for your input. I'd love to go to Disneyland with my kid but the checking bags procedure just puts me off. These days they have less customers than before, so they are more lenient with self-brought food. I wonder why no one protests about this.
 
Yes, they have strollers (& wheelchairs too) for rent. It costs 50 HK. They are located in the fire station in Main Street U.S.A.
 
Bird Flu??

Well, I was concerned about travelling to Hong Kong with our 3 year old child with the Bird Flu scare that has been going around... Is it saFe to travel to Hong Kong and safe to eat chicken / poultry there??!!
 
It is said that cooking your chicken/poultry thoroughly is okay. Well, I guess it's the same for pork and beef and mutton, etc - whether you're traveling to Hong Kong, Tokyo or New York.
