Home Return Permit vs HK Passport

Is there a difference between using a Home Return Permit or HK Passport to enter mainland China? Does one have a longer stay or less restrictions? Any other advantage or disadvantage when using either to enter China or HK?

most people i know with a HK passport always have a home return permit....i believe you're entitled to the home return permit when you have a HK passport. my whole family (excluding me) hold the home return permit (I hold a canadian) and they get through the lines within minutes! compared to a foreign passport, it is much much faster!
