holiday for helper?

Is today a day off for helpers? I looked on the gov site and read it as NOT being a day off but my helper told me it was. Then when we took our kids to the playground this morning there were no other mums and dads- they were all doing what we would have loved to do, sleep in- only helpers with kids. We often give her the day off even if it isn't one for helpers but today we really could have done with her around.

ok, i'm actually relieved. i'd hate for her to have lied to us. i wonder why so many are working today in our building. not very fair to them.

my maid has only worked for us for one month so she is not entitled to a holiday with pay until she has worked 3 months...look at hk gov website FAQ. However today is a stat hols for helpers whether paid or not.

Employers can also assign an alternative holiday to the helper instead of day off today. That may explain why you see so many helpers today. Some employers pay their helpers to work on statutory holiday but that is illegal, even with the consent of helpers.

They may choose not to go out. Some helpers find it expensive to go out more than 2x/week. And this week they've got 3 days off, (Wed, Sunday Monday).
