HK Closes Kindergartens and Primary Schools H1N1

awwww shucks! just my personal opinion is all... i know that there are many out there that don't agree with me...

amen Cara!

My husband's a teacher but he's being made to go in to babysit all the kids that parents will most probably continue to drop in - hopefully there aren't many of them as it's unfair on the poor kids to have to go into school and do nothing for 2 weeks..on the flipside it means K and I can go visit daddy anytime as he's got no lessons and no planning to do since he's moving to another school at the end of his contract..assuming there are no kids being sent in during that time. Im pregnant with my second and the last thing I need is a further savaging to my immune system. I'm up for a meetup if anyone's keen!

So you ladies all going to stay at home with your children for the next two weeks? Surely that would be the next step.

If schools are closed, what about our neighbours children? Best not to take the elevator either. In case someone in your building has it. In fact ANYONE in Hong Kong may have H1N1 too. So best to do online shopping. And not allow your helper her day off cause she may mingle with someone, right?

Yeah I'm being ridiculous. Sort of. If one is really concerned, one should quarantine our family, not lecture others.....

for interesting reading try the same thread on geoexpat.... interesting the different viewpoints from the male, non-parents...

there was no lecture... a little personally you took that...

it is far different, meeting up with one or two children than the kids being cramped into classrooms butting up to each other with 20 kids in a room, wouldn't you say?

ps> i guess you missed where i said that i didn't necessarily agree with the decision, but that i think they are doing their best to keep as many people as healthy as possible...

oh just ignore me, I'm so annoyed by the cancellation. Our girls go to IMS and its not cheap and also they had really small classes (i think there were 10 children in total in their class including my two) Now I have to think of things for them to do every morning instead of going to school. ... In my case, they will probably mingle with far more children and adults than if they were attending IMS.... I'm also a work at home mom, with a really busy month so my post was more out of frustration than common sense hahahahahahaha

no worries... i find it frustrating myself... i now have time to spend with my kids as my work is stopped for 2 weeks and my son is at home, but i find that i don't have $ to do what i'd like to with him...

good luck! we're all going to need it!

i didn't receive anything, but i'm not registered as a school.(if what you offer is "interest based course" you don't need to be)

Can't agree with you more but then are you doing everything as usual except sending your girls to school??

The mandarin playgroup they attend (Yi Fan) is staying open so at least they have something to do Saturday mornings.....

And yes if Mygym is open we'll go to that. I'm also taking them out to Playtown and Wisekids. It's raining and will be for a few days so indoor activities :(

Checked with Woodland playgroup and replied that no refund and no make up class...they are operated such a commercial organisation, no flexibility at all!!! Also, you have to pay a term fee and 2 months notice for not continue the term.

I really don't think individual schools and teachers should be obliged to deliver a service when the government has suspended classes. At least it's only a couple of weeks (at the moment).

After all, schools still have to pay staff, maintainence, rent etc etc.

It's not any more the schools' fault than a black rainstorm.

Babybuddies is not closing either and what annoys me is the reason they gave for not closing:
"In regards to the information provided by the government today (11th June) regarding the swine flu and the closure of schools, it does not include Baby Buddies. Baby Buddies will continue to operate classes as normal and therefore there will be no suspension of classes as we are an independent establishment. "
I don't know how and why they are considering themseves different from any other school. Its clear that their decision is highly motivated by money and shows total disregard for the well being of their students.
