HK Adventist, as good as Matilda?

Hi,
I've heard/read so many good comments about delivering at Matilda, but hardly any words about HK Adventist (the one on Stubbs Rd.). Anyone delivered there, how's your experience? I've tried booking at Matilda 3 months ago for my May delivery, but it was already fully booked then, so i'm now booked in Adventist. Like to know how it is compared to Matilda, as prices are almost similar within HKD2000 range difference.

I delivered at the Adventist! The mid-wives were excellent, food was good! Have a read through the similar threads below

i delivered twice at the adventist and even though most of my family lives in kowloon, i'm halfway through my third pregnancy and i'm still gonna go for the adventist no matter how difficult it will be! (with the maternity wards being full almost everyday, i'm really keeping my fingers crossed....)

i visited my friend who just had a c-section at the adventist and i was there on sun nite and last nite. she was in the big ward almost all by herself! only 1/2 the beds in the whole maternity ward were occupied so that's comforting news for those who wish to give birth there in the near future (ie me!!) however one sad thing we noticed was that ALL the nurses were different from those that took care of us during my previous two deliveries there. my friend said that she heard some of those nurses are new hires too. but anyways, my friend's decided to go with breastfeeding only and the fact that they still deliver the baby to your arms for this purpose is a big big plus!

thank you ggrizzy, for such updated info.
I think i've decided to give birth in adventist, going natural (god bless me). I've also enrolled in adventist's pre-natal preparation class, and i find the lecturing nurse Angela and the doc. (forgot his name) very helpful and knowledgeable. Is your friend happy w/ her mid-wife, nurse there? She has trouble breastfeeding? I'm also going for BF, but since this's my first time, i really have no idea how it's gonna turn out. Anxious.

I delivered at the Adventist the first time and will deliver there again in June. I loved it there. The midwives were so helpful and friendly and it just made the whole experience very pleasant.

my friend had no problems BF even though her bb had to stay behind for a day in the hospital due to slight jaundice problem. she, like me insisted on BF without any glucose or formula supplements and all the nurses/midwives their respected her decision. both mother and bb r home now and i think they're doing very well! i think not having to trudge to the nursery every few hrs during the night helped her too...

good luck w ur delivery(ies) and enjoy your bb(ies)!!

:burnout:

I delivered at the Adventist in mid Jan and I enjoyed my stay. The food was good though it's vegetarian, the portion was generous. The nurses were also nice. Another reason why I chose the Adventist was the location. It was convenient for my family and friends.

I delivered at Matilda twice (a great experience), but have had two long stays at the Adventist with both my children, one last month.

The care at Adventist was faultless - wonderful nursing staff. But the Matilda is MUCH more comfortable - the food is far better with 24hr service, rooms nicer and they have wifi.

I also found the admin staff at Adventist very officious/bureaucratic but would agree that the location is far more convenient.

I haven't stayed at Adventist but have visited friends there. Seems nice but was surprised that they didn't have cable TV! I understand that the price is similar to Matilda so expected the facilities to be largely the same. When you are bored in hospital, some good TV is a necessity!

Interestingly, having now looked into the two hospitals to decide where to try and book, I was shocked to see that the Adventist deposit for maternity is double or more than Matilda's deposit! Does anyone know why it is so high? I had always assumed that Matilda was regarded as "flasher" so wondering what justifies the non-refundable HK$40K or HK$50K deposit required at Adventist?

are you a hk resident? B/c the deposit should only be $20k if you've a hkid card... which i believe is comparable to mathilda. $40-50k i believe is for the non-residents (i.e. those coming from china to have babies in hk)...

Hi staargrl

Not sure if it has changed recently but I am a HKID holder and was told by Adventist that the deposit is $30K for a standard room (3-6 people), $40K for a twin room and $50K for a private room. For some reason it is much higher for maternity than for any other procedure. The deposit for a private room for maternity for a non-HK resident is $70K!!!

Starbucks,

Those deposits are what you pay upon admission and not for booking a maternity bed

In terms of deposit, I gave birth last year at Adventist and paid the deposit when I was about 6 weeks pregnant. At the time, the deposit was $20,000 and we could not choose what type of room we preferred.
I personnally had a BAD experience at Adventist, being placed on a floor other than the Maternity ward for my entire stay, which meant that my baby could not room-in and that I didn't even have the option of SEEING her until 12+ hours after delivery. There were other major problems, among them the (very noisy) construction that was ongoing my entire stay that they didn't inform me of at the time of deposit.

i would go where your doctor works best. my sisters doctor can deliver at both hospitals, but she prefers matilda because she says she works better as a team with nurses etc. at the matilda...i think it is important for the doctor to feel comfortable so that in case of an emergency the team of doctors will work more cohesively to help you....

unless you're having a c-section, you should be out of the hospital in 3 days anyways, so i would personally think more in terms of what the doctor is more comfortable with.

Hi Rani

I don't think I misunderstood the woman from Adventist as her email was clear that it was a deposit to be paid on booking. Extract from email below:

"For the deposit, please note that you need to pay for HK$50,000 (for private room)/ HK$40,000 (for semi-private)/ HK$30,000 (for ward room) for Hong Kong residents. And it can be paid by cash/ EPS/ bank draft/
cup card or credit card. "

There is an additional amount which is payable on admission but this will be waived if your insurance company gives you a guarantee.

I'm due this Nov and paid my $20K deposit in Mar. They can only gurantee you a bed, but not the type of room. It has to do with availability the day you're admitted to the hospital.

I had my normal delivery at Matilda this past July and I am so glad that I chose Matilda over other private hospitals. Due to the small number of rooms, my baby received very personal care from the midwives and nurses. The ratio of babies to nurses in the nursery is 2:1 when I stayed there.

I stayed in a private room for 4 nights (my baby had mild jaundice so we had to stay an extra night) and my doctor was Dr. Ghosh. The room had a balcony with a panoramic sea view. With the push of a button, a midwife will come within minutes. My baby was able to stay with me in the room for as long as I wish, and if I needed rest during the night, I could drop him off in the nursery. The hospital accommodated my every wish and demand, and I felt like I was in a 5-star resort. The food was so delicious that my husband kept stealing my portion (must try the sweet and sour pork and burger)!

I would definitely recommend the Matilda if money is not an issue (with the help of insurance, of course).

P.S. If you could, request Selvie as your midwife during labor. She is fantastic!
