HELPERS HELP please

HI all we are new to this live in helper and wondered if you can help answer a few questions i have

How much is a live in helper ?
How much holiday are they entitled to?
How often do you have to pay for a ticket home for them
How much is there health insurance
Are there any other fees to pay for them?
Who organises the contract or where do we get this from if we do not use an agency?
Is there a trial period allowed?
Also do they have set hours or do we agree on this at interview hiring stage?
Are there any tasks they dont do?


Sorry lots of questions but its all so new to us many thanks

Both Rani and HC have directed you to good websites.

My only other thought would be, in order for the relationship to be successful, to communicate regularly. Write down your instructions, and set times to have "meetings" to discuss what is working, areas of confusion and what needs to be cleared up/changed.

As you are new in this area, let me extend dimsum mum's advice with a few tidbits from me:
If you treat them like slaves, you will get bad treatment in return.
If you treat them like workers, you will get decent work but not much else.
If you treat them like family, you will get treated as one of their own.

To each his own, but we decided to treat our helpers like family and in turn : Just last weekend we were in Cebu attending a big wedding to celebrate the marriage of one of helpers close relatives. Our 3 kids were part of the wedding party and they loved it.

Our 2 helpers have been with us for close to 10 years and they love and respect us as much as we love and respect them.
