help - will be 18 wks when i arrive in hk and will have a VERY hi-risk delivery

moving from nyc in a few weeks. need to find an ob very experienced in complicated surgery and hi-risk. will need to be delivered via c-section at 36 weeks, may need to live near/in hospital before that. private or public? will i even be able to get into a private hospital? insurance is not an issue. am not worried about breastfeeding, etc (this is my 3rd c-section). have received recommendations for drs lord, doo and dr lau at prince of wales. prince of wales is seems too far (will be living on south side).

I had my delivery (c-sec) done by very experienced Dr. Robert Stevenson, he specializes in compli/high-risk preg, though mine wasn't exactly the case (had an emerg c-sec) but the most other patients visiting him were in similar situation. He has excellent bed-side manner, very thorough and will answer all your questions in detail. He was very patient with us.
He mainly operates in Adventist Hospital.. which I think is close to south side. Too bad we moved to Singapore... and still haven't found a doctor as good as him. I strongly recommend him.
Since he is also one of the senior doctors in Adventist, may be he can get you in now.

dr lucy lord would be able to deliver at adventist too - she could also go to matilda. i would recommend dr lam yung hang he's very good - adventist, HK Sanatorium is where he'd deliver. you can find there information on the website easily. i had dr lam and his bed side manners were excellent, i would highly recommend him, not sure if he deals specifically with high risk pregnancies though....dr lord definitely does though but there are pros / cons about her bed side manner...you will have time to book when you get here i believe.

public would be best for the baby as the medical facilities are the best in the public sector - having said that, i would avoid matilda for your birth because they have good facilities for the mom but not for the baby - my 1st one was born at matilda but sent to queen mary hospital ICU cause matilda did not have the life saving equipment for my daughter (only queen mary and prince of wales had that machine).

I suggest you call Central Health, Lucy Lord's practice or Dr Philip Ho Tel: 852 2899 2293 (he is an excellent Ob/Gyn who I have had for both my babies - I delivered naturally but he has a reputation as the best c-section doctor in town) URGENTLY and make immediate enquiries regarding hospital availability. It is going to be hard to get in at this stage. If you deliver before 34 weeks you will definitely need to be in public system but if it's after that and you or the baby do not require the highest level ICU you will be ok in private system. My understanding is the private hospitals have ICU but not for very premature or dangerously ill patients either babies or adults. I think you may find it slightly easier to get into Sanatorium than Adventist or Matilda which are very popular with expats. I hear from the Chinese doctors that Sanatorium is an excellent hospital and is certainly extremely comfortable. If you will have an HKID and either a work visa or dependent visa then you are entitled to free care in the public hospitals and would end up at Queen Mary in Pokfulam which is a great hospital from a medical point of view although not at all luxurious.

I think the public hospitals are generally better for high risk situations but it depends on WHAT your high risk situation is. I just had a baby with a genetic disease and would not have been able to see any of the previously mentioned doctors for my pregnancy without being referred elsewhere, and I DEFINITELY would not have even been allowed to deliver in private hospitals, even if I wanted to.

IF your high risk situation was something that was more common, you may be able to have your choice of doctors including the ones mentioned above, but if it is something more rare, they may need to refer you to one of the above doctors (or another one who specialises in high risk pregnancies).

It really depends on what the situation is though as to who you should see and where you should deliver...

would agree with nicolejoy about public hospitals being generally better for high risk situations. my first was born at matilda, was meant to be a normal delivery...something went wrong (meconium aspiration) and they didn't have the life saving machine at matilda for her - she was sent to QMH within 2 hours of being born. with my case - is SHOULD have been a "normal" delivery - all signs were normal, until the birth...needless to say I did not deliver #2 there -went to HK Sanatorium with Dr Lam instead - great place and great doctor! there equipment is new and more well equipped...though having said that they still WON'T HAVE the life saving machine my #1 daughter needed (it's a machine that drums air into your lungs that is about the height of a person! - only QMH and Prince of Wales has 1 each...Pamela Youde might also, but not 100% sure).
