help w/ macau trip

We are thinking about going to macau for a short trip next month. (4 days 3 nights). We've never been there before, and are wondering what there is to do besides the casinos? We don't gamble, so most likely won't go to any casinos. We have 2 young kids (3 and 6) that will be with us as well.

What are good hotels to consider that aren't terribly expensive? What is there to do for the whole family? What are your favorite restaurants?
 
It should be fun. Look at the Pousada de Mong Ha (it's a training hotel for the tourist college) but everything is really high standard and people try really hard- you get a lot for your money and it's in an older residential area away from the casinos. There are nice parks and the old buildings are really pretty and a change from HK
 
Yes, I agree with Sleuth--that's a long time to spend in Macau--it's a small place and not much to do (especially if you aren't going to gamble and do the nightlife thing). I do recommend going to Cirque du Soliel at the Venetian Hotel if you can get tickets. We went there with our 2-year-old and he loved the show. Macau has a lot of great food actually so check out some of the older restaurants downtown. Other than that, there are historic sites to walk around but it gets crowded on the weekends so keep that in mind. Last November we went and stayed only one night and that was PLENTY in Macau. The ferry trip might be interesting for your child but that depends on how into boats they are.
 
Well, I disagree a little. We've had several 3-4 day trips and really loved the change of pace. We always stayed down in Coloane, and just enjoyed playing on the beach, eating Portuguese at Fernando's, getting THE BEST egg tarts every day ... There are nice little squares, with different architecture, and it's just fun to wander around. If you get a hotel with a pool and are happy to hang out we think it's a great escape.
 
agree with thanka and sleuth. we felt just 1 night was plenty in macau!! haha! we were there when my son was 1.5 yrs old. he spent the day just walking around the casinos, going on a gondola at the venetian and eating. i think it's actually kind of boring for a toddler as it's just a lot of walking and just looking around....
 
Where's good to stay in Coloane, Monte? We're thinking about a 3 day trip ourselves, maybe closer to Easter. But I guess better book now! Thanks.
 
thanks for the ideas. We're still debating between Macau or just going to the Hollywood Hotel (disneyland) for a few days. I'd love to really get away from HK for a few days, but unfortunately bali and Thailand are out of our price range at the moment.
 
i would say disneyland is much more fun for kids for obvious reasons. the disneyland resort seems a bit more child-friendly than the hollywood hotel.

bali and thailand are amazing for the future. we found the beaches better in thailand, but we liked our hotel better in bali so you can't go wrong in either choice!

The is the most famous portuguese egg tart place in Macau. It's in Coloane island and it's worth a trip. There will be a line up on the weekends but it's worth it

Best in Macau. It's in the Grand Hyatt and it's great for Sunday Brunch
Another alternative is Aurora at Altira Hotel. The food selection is not as great but it's also good.

Beijing Duck

This restaurant specializes in Beijing Duck and you need to reserve a duck in advance. The restaurant is also inside Grand Hyatt and the restaurant is from the famous BJ duck chain from BJ. Other dishes are also very delicious and you can go for both lunch or dinner. (also need reservations esp during wkds)

Great for lunch and dinner with superb views too. Ask for booth table

For kids entertainment, there's a kid's play area in City of Dreams called Kid's City. It's a very kid friendly area/ play gym with slides, toys, ball pool etc and it's great for the little ones

Other than that, if you stay at the WEstin in Coloane or just go for bbq brunch or lunch, they have a huge grass area and also an outdoor play area, excellent for little ones esp on a nice day!
 
went with my 2 kids to macau for 3 days 2 nights...they ended up at Kids City a couple times and just wandering around the malls...i'll be staying at the Westin for sure next time (this time we were at the hyatt - which is great for adults) since there is more to do. not sure how old your kids are (mine were 2.5yrs and 8mths) so any hotel room / new environment is fun for them!
