Heaters and Babies

Now that it`s SO COLD, we`re going to buy a heater. The only problem is, my 10 month old is crawling and pulling up on everything. He`d get burnt for sure. Is there a way around this?
What have you done with heaters and babies? I just can`t face this HK winter without one. My husband and I are cold people (even though I`m from Canada, there`s central heating inside everywhere) and need to warm up! Help!!!

Shenzhennifer, I have the same problem here with my soon-to-be 12 months old. She is crawling everywhere and I only turn the heater on when I am literally watching her. I bought the ceramic heater too but I dont think it helps with the problem..

Hi, last winter we put our oil heater in a playpen so that our baby couldn't reach it. It was a large playpen so no fire hazard as the heater was nowhere near the sides.
Also, yesterday I was in Fortress (buying more heaters!) and they now sell Delongi brand oil heaters that have cool sides - i.e the heat comes out of the top. These can also be wall mounted. These would be a safer choice for crawlers...

you can also consider installing heaters in the bathroom. (Heaters which are specifically design for the bathroom)

How about changing your air conditioner into one that has both cold and heat function. It would cost more than a heater though. I am using a heater for my 6 month old now but would need to change the aircon in his room to prevent him getting himself hurt when he starts crawl around.

Not sure about in HongKong, but in the mainland, it costs a bit less than 4000 yuan for a good brand of air-con and heater.

Right, just read sherwes post, I remember the heater in my son's room now could also be mounted onto the wall. But I got it in the mainland too. I am sure you could get it in HongKong too.

Yes we had the Daikin inverter aircon in our previous apartment and it was fantastic in both summer and winter. I miss them. They are slightly more expensive and in my opinion, totally worth the money.

But if you are not thinking of changing air-conditioner (which will cost more than buying heaters), I am planning to put the ceramic heater in a raised platform where the baby can't reach.

We have the blower/ fan type heater which is perfect for a house with babies/ toddlers. The outside does not get hot at all as compared to ceramic heaters.

We recently got a panasonic split aircon with heater for our living room and its fanatastic but its damn expensive arnd 9000$ for 1.5t. Still its safe for our toddler. But does anyone if we can get window a/c also with a heating function?

Shwetakhanna, no cool/heat aircons are available for split aircons only, and not for window type. I've asked around too.

Our apartment complex doesn`t have split aircons (nor do they allow them) - just the crummy old fashioned kind. My apartment in SZ before (same age as this) had them - it was great.
What`s a ceramic heater? Are those the oil filled ones that look like standing radiators? I`ve used them before and they`re really awesome, but HOT. We are thinking maybe we can just turn it on after the baby goes to bed...:(
Sherwes - thanks for the tip about the oil filled ones that are cool on the sides. Though that might not matter when my son tries to pull up on it. I might just buy a normal one and put it on our dining table.
Geomum- I`ll check out the ones that blows hot air too. Are they very effective, though?

Man, it is COLD!!! Get me out of here!!!

Heya, it's like a fan that blows out hot air. I like the ones that can (1) swivel, (2) with an additional fan function that i can use for winter. I'm attaching a website to show you what these (as well as oil heaters) look like.

?q?x?l/?x???? Heater

We've never had a problem with this as we taught our son really early that a heater is hot and it's a no-no. If he got near it, he got disciplined. Now he knows to not even go near the heater. He just admires it from afar and says "hot", "hot." We were also using one when he was very small and then again at around 1-year-old. It also helps to locate the heater somewhere that is not directly in the middle of the room or put it behind something that is not easily reachable. It doesn't mean the baby won't get to it but it makes it less obvious. We have just a space heater at our house but my parents-in-law use a stand-up oil ceramic heater that gets hot but it's not the same risk as the one we have. We've actually never, ever had a problem with it. As long as you keep an eye on the baby (as you would most of the time anyway) then there's no issue, I think. And knowing my son, he's been mobile for most of his life and has been curiously getting into everything. It's just a good time to start teaching boundaries, I guess.

thanka2 - boundaries are great and they should be in effect for little ones. But with an apartment so small, with not that many places to explore, I try to let him go around as much as possible. The only time when I get `mean` strict is when he`s touching cords and the stand up fans (when we used them). Other than that, I don`t want to always be saying NO NO NO. It`s not nice for him and it`s tiring for me. That`s why I like the keep things safe as much as I can.

Aside from it not being safe to have heaters tucked away somewhere, they`re less efficient than when out in the open.
But we`ll see what kind of heater we can get and then we`ll just have to deal with it.

My poor baby could hardly sleep half the night last night - I`m sure he was too cold, and was waking up every 10 minutes. Fun night for both of us. I`m wondering if anyone is using some kind of heater in their baby`s room. Is it that bad to use? It`s REALLY COLD!

I think that the age of the child determines whether just saying "no" would work or not. I'm thinking that we'll probably be able to just use the heater (ceramic, that's not very hot on the outside - BUT it is pretty easy to topple over - I'm sure my daughter could push it over), because my daughter is now 13 months and is starting to understand "No, don't touch" and actually listen. Last winter she was only 1-4 months and wasn't mobile enough for the heater to be a hazard. But probably I would guess that just saying "No, don't touch" wouldn't be AS effective for younger mobile kids - around 8-10 months, because they're probably still learning what that means. I know my daughter at that age didn't really get it...

Shwetakhanna, Miriam 228 - We have the Daikin split A/C in our living room too, which is great but in our bedrooms we have window mount A/C which have heating option.

Its by General ( Fujitsu ? ) Model type R410A.

It can be a bit noisy ( as with all window type A/Cs ) and of course not as good as the Daikin but it does the job. We & BB were nice and toastie last night!!

Shenzhenifer, if your baby is sleeping in a crib, why can't you use a heater in his room? If he is inside the crib then it wouldn't be a safety hazard.
