The Department of Health on Friday warned people to take precautions against cold weather - following the death this week of a new-born baby.

The baby suffocated to death after being wrapped in heavy bedding in an attempt to protect it from the cold.

Department assistant director Au Tak-kwong said parents should keep babies lightly clothed in order not to restrict their bodily movements.

Dr Au said babies' feet should rest at the foot of cots and their arms should stay outside light bedding. Bedding should be tucked securely into the bottom of cots to reduce the risk of it slipping over their heads.
