Good doctor for 'torticollis muscularis (筋性斜頸)'

Dear All,

My baby is in Korea now with her mom. She was born on the 4th/July at 4kg. She's healthy and no problems with anything else than this thing called 'torticollis muscularis (筋性斜頸)' on her left neck which also affects her backbone and left leg to some degree.

For those who's new to this 'torticollis muscularis (筋性斜頸)', it's kind of a muscular lump that gets developped without no specific reason for new born babies.

Anyway, we found out that she had one on her left neck and she began the treatment + the massages at home after about 2 weeks after the discovery.

She goes to a pediatrician who specialises in child rehabilitation and goes to the orthopaedics from time to time to check whether her bones are affected by the 'torticollis muscularis' or not.

Well, luckily, continuous treatments + massages will do her good and she'll be normal in about 2 or 3 months time.

But, the thing is that she and her mom will have to come to HK in a month or 2 months time and she'll probably be needing the same treatment and X-rays here in HK.

Does anyone know which doctor (or hospital) should be most suitable for her treatment?

I hate to say this but, some of the hospitals in HK do not meet my standards. That's why I'm asking for help.

We had good experiences at the Adventist (Dr Stephanie Chow is great..!) but, that was at the OBGY.
I know there are good pediatricians at the Adventist but, not sure if they have good doctors who know much about my daughter's case.

All I know is that there's a children's hospital called The Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital. Is that the only children's hospital in HK..?

Well, please introduce me some good pediatricians who specialise (or dealt extensively) with 'torticollis muscularis'.

And if your child went thru the same experiences, please share me with your valuable thoughts.

Hi young,

you are right. my 4mth old is still doing physiotherapy and i found the lump when she is 2weeks old. i went to seek medical help here and it was a waste of precious time to get her neck on the recovery.

I got her to singapore for 2nd opinion and realized that all the previous time, effort and baby's pain have been almost invalid. I'm currently doing therapy(as taught by the singapore infant therapy specialist) everyday by myself.

But my girl have lose out much precious time before and i need to keep a close check on her improvement since she is getting older and more resilient to the therapies, i'm desperately looking for good physiotherapist or pediatricians here to access her condition since it's impossible to keep flying to and forth singapore.

Could you kindly let me know if you happen to be recommended any? and vice versa.. i'll definitely let you know if i got any good recommendation.

By the way, how is the baby doing? would sure like to exchange notes with you.

my daughter had torticollis in her neck, and we went to the duchess of kent for twice weekly PT appointments for nine months, then we were dropped down to once weekly appointments, then finally "every once and a while".

we were in the public system which the duchess of kent is also part of. we did not have a pediatrician who specifically dealt with torticollis, as the PT seemed to be the best judge of how that is progressing. if you are looking for a good pediatrician who has seen many children that have torticollis, than i can recommend dr barbara lam, who was the former head of the NICU/SCBU at queen mary hospital. she is fantastic.

Thank you! may i ask how's the therapist at duchess of kent? is there one therapist to follow up on your child case? could you recommend me the therapist name?

How is you child doing now? fully recovered? My daughter left eyes is getting smaller than the unaffected side recently. so i'm kinda worried.

there are several therapists at the duchess of kent, and you are assigned to the one therapist according to their availability.
the receptionist is also fantastic there.

our daughter is pretty much fully recovered. the doctor will occasionally ask her if she has stiffness and she always says no. she can move her neck freely from side to side and just about has 180 range. this is huge progress from the little girl they originally thought had cerebral palsy.

if i can suggest that you enrol your daughter in gymboree or other fun kid stretching activities as soon as she is able to crawl and play. i think that really made a difference for our daughter. she didn't like the pain associated with PT, and disliked the stretches, but she loved gymnastics, which caused her to use her muscles a LOT.

thank you for the infos. my girl learnt a new "trick" today. I was going to start her therapy session and she now tilt her head purposely so that i can't do the physio without a "struggle".

i really wonder how she got that figured out.. she's 5 mths and i can't imagine if she's older.

Dear All,

Luckily, my baby has shown some extensive progress and there's visible difference in her neck.

The lump in her neck is barely (or less) touchable now.
We're not sure if it's because of just 'growing older' or because of the therapies we used to get for about 2 and half a month in Korea but, anyway, she's gotten better and we'll probably do an X-Ray on her neck in about a month time or so.

We go to the Adventist in Happy Valley and our doctor (Dr Lau) there told us that there are also good doctors who can see to her for the torticolis if we want to. But, he also suggested (after brifley touching her neck about a month ago) that it's not grave and no special treatment seems necessary for her.

Anyway, will post once again if anything comes up or if we go thru the X-ray soon.
