Any parents here with their 1 year old doing Glenn Doman's Flash Card method? Would love to hear your experience and views, please.

My boy is 13months now, and I am just started to want to do this with him.

Cheers,

Hi Merryma! Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with the flash card method yet, though I am starting to think about using it after watching a TV show about it. Just wondering if you know where I can buy flashcards or books to read about the method. Thanks!

I'm a fan of glenn doman, i got the read and math kit. I used dots at 6 months or less, read kit after. My boy at 2 yrs old loves to read, though i think any method or flash card will do. it's just that the domann cards are convenient and big letters.

If you can get hold of it, buy. Sometimes there are 2nd hand at the trading post.

I got the read kit in glenn doman group in singapore for HK$500.

Hi Thanks for the replies.

FutureHKmom, I am creating the flashcards myself, thought it will be more personalized (with words more to the HK context) and save the $.
I print each word with huge font on A4-cardpaper. I can share my own soft copy with you if you want.

I am still waiting for the book "How to teach your baby to read" at the local library, but will see if I could buy one from bookstore here. So far, I learn about the method reading online articles.
You may want to take a look at this Teach your baby to Read: Glenn Doman?s Method | Child and Me
You can even download some ready made material from the site.

Hi Crystal88, may I ask if you follow the number of cards required each day for your baby? (E.g., 3 times a day, starting with 5 cards and increased to 25 after 5 days and discharge 5 cards while also add 5 new cards from day 6th onward), or how do you do it?
Baby sometimes may not be as cooperative, any things that once made you wanted to give up?

Besides Glenn Doman, is there any other things you do to help your baby to enjoy learning/ reading?

My boy is already 13months now. I guess like the typical 1 year old, he isn't able to sit on the same spot watching me flashing the cards for more than a minute.

Would love to hear more please. :thanks

Yes, i follow exactly what doman suggested, but i did that around 8 months when babies still "listen" to you. I haven't given up, i still read to him those cards now, but not single words, the kit comes with short sentences. I sometimes find my boy lying down or sitting with books on hand. He loves reading. Read to your kid often. I have lots of books at home.

I have a 2 months old baby now and i'm starting him with math kit.

Hi crystal88, glad to hear from you again.

I was wondering if we need to make picture cards for the words? I mean a word card followed by a picture for that word then another new word and so on.
When I see some of the videos demonstrating the method, there weren't picture cards, but only the word cards. Then when I look at some of the ready-for-use homemade material by some parents on the internet, those material do include the picture cards... I am a bit confuse what exaxtly the method should be. How do you do it??

Besides English, do you also teach your baby another language through the GD method?

Wauh, so you have a little one too :flower: Congratulation!
BTW, are you a fulltime stay home mom?

Cheers,

hi merryma,

Mine doesn't have picture bec my goal is to let him learn to read.

Only english from GD.

Yes, i got a baby now, thanks. Full time mom but i plan to work part time soon.

Hi Crystal88,
is that mean you only want your baby to recognise the words even if he doesn't understand the meaning of the words?
Actually I think that should be the way too, cause I can always name the real things whenever I come across one and baby should be able to recall that sound like a word he has heard of from the flashcards activity.

I am expecting one more in November....
Currently I am off from my fulltime work until January next year, so I treasure every single minute with my boy and just enjoy so much seeing him learning and developing.

I've considered doing this too but my boy is way too active for it. For all the promotion videos I've seen about this method, the child is always like paying attention and sitting still--I promise that will not happen with my boy so he'll just have to learn another way.

Hi Thanka2, I guess it's gonna be the same with my boy too... He is 13months plus now and kin of active, walks non-stop and touching things around him... though I haven't "officially" started the program, I have tried flashing some other smaller flashcards I have bought before, he could only pay attention for the first card, then moved on wanting to touch my cards or coming forward to me...hahaha.
So, I am also now collecting some views on how to teach this to an active little 1 year plus.
As mine is still on the stage of kin of enjoying the pee-ka-boo game, I read from a parent suggesting to post the words on the wall with a blank paper cover each word, let the boy reveals the word and parent reads it, then quickly move on to another. To make it easier to change the words each time, I have thought of pasting several plastic clear folders on the wall, so I can change the words by inserting new cards.

so, what other program you are working on for your active boy now?

Merryma, I too recently became aware of the Doman right brain education and trying to start on my girl who is coming to 9mths.
I also was confused and overwhelmed by all the different methods and way of teaching and do a few weeks of research literally!! on the net.
Here's what I tried and finally decided on. First I tried my own DIY flashcards with hard cardboard and red ink as per Doman...but I could not flash those quick enough (1s per card) and so baby lost interest after 2-3 cards. Then I tried using Powerpoint flash only using red words, this too did not really interest her (she was more interested in the keyboard and mouse!)
Next, I tried words+ pic- that held her interest for like 3-4 words....the trick is to flash quickly and have interesting pics especially if those have any sounds, my girl especially love the animals slides since those make real noise, she would sit through the whole thing and laugh as well!!
I know Doman said no pics, but according to Dr Tilzer ( Your baby Can Read) multi sensory method works as well. (Google your baby can read)
The bottomline is - whatever you use, it has GOT to be something your baby AND you enjoy. Plus we do not test ( or try not to), because this is done like a game and yes- baby will learn and remember, to stop BEFORE you baby wants to stop to make it interesting.

Right now, I am using PP words+ pics with sound and also letting her watch your baby can read (just started for 2weeks but not on a strict schedule)....Actually as this will be ongoing activity for the next several months, I wonder if there are anymore mums doing these? will really love to get together to exchange and share tips/problems faced etc. Cheers!!

Hi merrymama!

I have a daughter who has been learning this method since she was 4 months old and she is now 11 months and she really enjoys it. I send her to KinderU in TKO for three times a week (twice for Mandarin and once for English) then I do it at home with her too but not as often and she is doing great in both languages. The teachers at KinderU are very professional and they love babies and I've learnt a lot from watching their tricks to get the babies attention using sounds, warm ups and games.

If you're interested in the materials you can buy Mandarin and English kits from KinderU in CB or TKO and they sell native speaker CD to also play if you want. The kits come in three levels which should take about a year and half to go through. They also sell all of Glen Doman's books.

I personally like taking the classes because they provide pictures, music, games and toys that keeps the babies attention while stimulating their learning too.

Hi Echo,
I also live in TKO and trying to find some mums around here with baby my daughter's age (she is coming 9mths) to let her meet more friends.
I wonder if you are working or may be interested to get together for chat or coffee sometime in TKO?

I am also very keen on right brain education and hoping to find some mums to share on this as well.
Please PM if interested, cheers!

Hi moms,
I can't do the program with my laptop infront of my boy too, he will touch the mouse and disturb the keyboards. So now, I have just started to do it yesterday (officially), pluging my laptop to the TV, and he sit far from able to reach it. I do the English with TV (PC), and have just created some Chinese cards (without pictures) to do with the cards flashing methods. Will see how he response to the methods, and I guess at different developmental stage moms need to be flexible with the methods too. until he past the stage of love to touch everything and move around, I will probably do with my laptop again (a lot less hassle...)

It's a great ideas to get together to share more ideas and views, love to join you ladies...
I live in Taikoo area, am in my 4th months for 2nd baby, and often feel too tired to travel far, so if you ladies come by to the Island, would love to catch a coffee with you. Please stay in touch with PM.

Once again, thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
Merryma

Hi Merryma,

At 13 months they are so active and won't sit still even for 5 cards, i did it when my baby was smaller, though the disadvantage, you don't know if he knows what am i doing.

And i also went to KinderU CWB for 2 trial classes with baby so i got the idea how to do it.

TKO flash card babies gathering

are you ladies keen to meet up? pls advice your preferred dates. am running my own biz and time is pretty flexible:)
we could meet up at pacific coffee @ PoLam MetroCity or 1 of our apts.

Hi Crystal88, in fact even an one year old, I wonder if he knows what I am doing...haha
I am doing the English with 10 cards playing through the TV (with PPS file from my laptop), and I am thinking slowly adding to 15 or more depending on his reaction. I only do twice a day cause I am also just started to do the Chinese words with him (with 1 to 2 Chinese words printed on 5"X8" cards, and without pictures).

Looks like I can check out KinderU to see if I may also enroll him there and learn how they do it too.
For my next one, I got to do it earlier, while he/she still managable...:haha:

Hi MaiYe, would love to meet, but going to PoLam is a problem to me. If you moms come by to HK Island, please let me know, would definitely love to meet... we can exchange number through PM.
I am not working now, unless to come out with baby otherwise my schedule is flexible.
:thanks
