Gifts for 3-year old boy

To all experienced moms out there. What do 3-year old boys like these days? I would like to buy a birthday gift, and would prefer to buy something nice that he will like, instead of just random presents. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

these are characters from various tv shows or movies. my almost 5 year old LOVED lightning mcqueen (a red race car from the movie CARS) when he was 18m-4yr.

diego and dora are tv shows. diego is dora's cousin.

ben 10 is a fairly new cartoon show with movies etc as well.

I think anything with wheels will be fine. We have a 3 year old boy and he is crazy about cars trains planes but books are also good presents
