Getting ready for Christmas

This is the first year we planning to get a christmas tree in our home. We are really excited about it, & still debating if we should get a real or fake tree. Can you share where we can shop for a christmas tree and if there is any place that we can get a good bargain.

thank you very much!

IKEA seem to have the cheapest trees around... about $569 for a 2m tree (including stand). if you order before November 15, they offer free delivery.

for me, nothing beats a real tree. before kids, i never did a real one... since kids we've ONLY had real ones. MUCH nicer, and i LOVE the smell... brings back a few good childhood memories.

the ones i am referring to at IKEA are real.

you can also get real trees at some supermarkets, all plant/tree nurseries, and the flower market in Prince Edward.

Definitely would get a real tree! We have had a real tree for the past few years and it has been really nice for us. With a baby in the house this year, we are really looking forward to decorating the tree with him! We have already ordered ours this past weekend! We ordered it from a store in Central (sorry don't know the name as hubby does the ordering) on Wellington Street just up the street from Lan Kwai Fong (before you get up to Lyndhurst Terrace). Wellington is a one way street and the store is on the right side of the street as you are driving up the street. You can't miss it as there are lots of plants and trees outside. If you order early, you can get a discount. The price includes delivery and pick up for disposal after Christmas. :)

fake ones you can get from jusco at a reasonable price. recyclable and environmentally friendly.

I always grew up having a real tree and love the smell - it is Christmas for me. BUT this year we are having Christmas in HK (can't travel as #2 due in Jan) and we are going for a "nice" fake one. I agree with reei in that I feel guilty now for killing a tree just for the sake of 2 weeks of Christmas-ness. Each to their own though and I may change my mind when the house doesn't smell of Christmas!

the thing about the real trees (at least the ones you get in hk) is they are "farmed" trees... not much different than buying bread made of farmed wheat, in my opinion.

they don't just head out into virgin forest to cut down any old tree that looks good. they are planted specifically for the christmas tree market. for me, that makes me feel better for buying one.

As Cara said, xmas trees for commercial sale are farmed, and actually, just by growing them, oxygen is added to the air. The same cannot really be said of plastic trees, which, just by manufacturing them, the environment is being weakened.
People do fuss a lot around xmas time whether to buy real or not. I`m curious to take a walk in their homes to see all the wooden furniture (and particleboard) and home accessories.

reei, what kind of trees do Jusco have are recyclable and environmentally friendly? Has a new producted been marketed?

I`ll probably be getting a fake one this year. Our apartment is too small to get a nice, real one. Plus, all that needle maintenance. Plus, baby is at that age where he`s just into everything. I don`t want to be constantly pulling needles out of his mouth, along with all the ornaments too.

There's a nursery along Wong Nai Chung Rd in Happy Valley (opposite the entrance to the racetrack, close to Sanatorium). I think they do real trees. PNG Florist on the Peak does real trees (sorry, don't have contact details).

I'd love a real one this year but will probably wait till next year
as toddler may impale new born with pine needles :P.

We had a fake one last year when we were in a smaller home which we had to chuck after christmas as the stand broke (this was from japan home centre) I ended up buying a pot and a bag of pebbles to balance the tree and tied a festive bow around it. Sure, it ended up looking much better but was almost needlessly expensive...attached a picture..toddler crying in front of tree - classic!

Also, apparently spotlight has a sale tomorrow (tuesday) 20% off on all Christmas items including sale items

Thanks everyone for the great tips. I would love to get a real tree too, and am sure the kids will love it as well. We only had a small fake tree previously, & i think a real tree will be a great change for the kids & family this coming christmas.

How is it like maintaining a real tree, are they any special things that i need to take care other than watering it.

FutureHKMom, may i know how much you paid for your real tree at Central?

Really looking forward to Christmas!!!!

nope, you just need to keep adding water.

i'm guessing that a tree from central is going to cost A LOT more than most other places...the trees in DB were usually around $800, if memory serves me correctly.

We have a tallish plant/sort of tree that lives on our balcony 360 days a year and then it comes indoors for Christmas (pot and all!) - we stick stuff/decorate the pot and then hang up our Christmas ornaments on the plant/tree and it looks really nice for 5 days. My nearly 4 year old is still quite enchanted by it and I hope my toddler will enjoy it this year too. Bought the plant second hand for about $200 two years ago - this will be the third Christmas that we're using it in Hong Kong :yeah2

my aunt and uncle have a cool GOD cardboard tree that they tape decorations on... they've used it for about 5 or 6 years easily!

Price for the Christmas trees in the store in Central on Wellington Street varies - they sell two types of trees, one being more expensive than the other. And price also depends on what size you want - I think they have 3-4 feet, 5-6 feet, 7-8 feet or something like that. My husband got the more expensive type (the Noble I think) and got a 5-6 feet one and I think it costs over $1000. If you order now earlier, you will get a discount.

Thanks FutureHKmom. really got to go & check it out now. didnt know there are so many diff kinds of tree. Since this is my first time shopping for a real tree, will do more homework so that we can get a nice tree.

any advise will greatly be appreciated!!!

many thanks :)

You should be able to order a real tree from Parknshop and Wellcome. I do remember seeing order forms last year.
