Gestational Diabetes and Anemia

Do the HK doctors routinely test for Gestational Diabetes and Anemia, and when/during what week of the pregnancy do they usually conduct the tests?

Thanks.

the publis system tests EVERYONE for GD. not sure about anemia though.

i think the testing for GD depends on you. i'm a little overweight (about 20 pounds) but the drs told me they needed to test me early because of "your obesity".. their bedside manner... wow, so awesome!

they tested me at 9 weeks for both pregnancies. it was aweful for me because i had such aweful morning sickness...the thing is if you vomit, you void the test and have to do it again on another day...

I was tested for gestational diabetes in the private system at 28 weeks. You have to drink a pint of sugar solution and then have your blood taken once every hour for three hours.

But every week from when I first when to visit the ob they take a urine sample to test for protein and sugar.

Thanks for the replies. I am about 24 weeks along but my doctor still has not mentioned either of these tests to me. I was about 10 pounds overweight when I got pregnant but my doctor never brought up the GD issue, just told me not to gain too much weight while pregnant.
Should I request the test?

if you do the public system...
you fast from midnight the night before. you have your blood taken and then you drink what feels like a huge amount of sickly sweet, disgusting syrupy water. then you wait 2 hours and have your blood taken again.

that's it....

I did the test at Tsan Yuk too. Cara, I don't think eveyone does it. For me they discovered diabetes runs in my family and recommeded I do it. Only 5 of us took the test. I was around 30 weeks at the time.

HTH

they may have changed it, but from what i understood during my first, they made everyone do it as a precaution...

the first time i did it, there were about 20 women there.

this time, i did it at QMH as i'm being taken care of by the high risk team... there were about 15 women there.

i truly hope they don't make everyone do it. it is an absolutely aweful test! i dread it for days before hand!

Regarding anemia, the public system tests you on your 1st visit. I was 8 weeks, and I found out that I have a slight case of anemia. Private doctors don't test you for anemia until later on....

When I was 13weeks, my dr.(private) did the antenatal test for me, which included random glucose, ABO/Rh, CBC (haemoglobin, etc), Hep B Ag/Ab, Rubella, VDRL, CMV Ab. my phone report was, everything alright but glucose (which is 8.0). so, I was suggested to do the glucose tolerance test (OGTT). That glucose drink was better than what I've been told.

So, I think if you are 24 weeks already, you must have some blood test done already.. and your dr. should know everything but just not discussed with you about the results.

I only had a blood test before I became pregnant, nothing afterwards except the testing of pregnancy hormone levels and the screenings.

I asked my doctor and she suggested I could get the GTT test when I go in for my next check up, which will be during my 29th week.

Is testing during the 29th week okay, or will that be too late?
