Formula for 12 month old?

I unexpectedly need to wean my baby as I have bad asthma and needed to be on strong medicines.
What is a suitable formula to give a baby that has only been exclusively bf still now?

i have been mixing 'snow ' formula with breast milk and she is alright with both. you might wanna try that.
 
from 12 months, you can just give regular cow's milk. why have to wean him twice? too much work for my liking.

I had to wean my exclusively (except for solids and water!) BF baby at 12 months for medical reasons, and I switched straight to cows milk. Didn't see the need to start formula and have to wean from that, also.
 
I can look up the drugs you need to take in the book, Medications and Mothers' Milk by Dr. Thomas Hale. This is the best book to find out if the medications are compatible with breastfeeding or not. Many doctors look up the drugs in books written by the dug companies which often give biased information to protect themselves from law suits.

Just let me know the name of the drug.

Dear Sarah,
The drug is prednisolone 20mg a day.
I am also on Augmentin and Ventoline inhaler on frequent basis. I think the latter 2 is acceptable, please correct me if I am wrong.

At the same time, if I were to pump and dump, how long should I wait for the medicine to clear from body before resuming bf?
(The prednisolone is a 3 days course)
PS I suggested pump and dump to the hospital staff, but she just told me that I should wean as its best for baby!

When you say cow's milk, do you mean the powdered ones in cans or the regular fresh cold milk from supermarkets?

And what kind of brands have anyone tried please? thanks!
 
We use Pura milk from Australia, the dark blue one, in the refrigerated dairy section. Give baby whole milk (not skim).
 
Prenisolone has a Lactation Risk of L2 = SAFER
Drug which has been studied in a limited number of breastfeeding women without an increase in adverse effects in the infant. And/or, the evidence of a demonstrated risk which is likely to follow use of this medication in a breastfeeding woman is remote.
Half life of this drug is 24 hours and so it will take 5 days to completely leave your body.

Augmentin and Ventolin has a Lactation Risk of L1 = SAFEST
Drug which has been taken by a large number of breastfeeding mothers without any observed increase in adverse effects in the infant. Controlled studies in breastfeeding women fail to demonstrate a risk to the infant and the possibility of harm to the breastfeeding infant is remote; or the product is not orally bioavailable in an infant.

There are five Lactation Risks, L1 = SAFEST, L2 = SAFER, L3 = MODERATELY SAFE, L4 = POSSIBLY HAZARDOUS and L5 = CONTRAINDICATED.

I was on prednisolone (effectively the same thing) when my baby was less than a week old and my doc said it was safe to continue breastfeeding. I was on it for 2 weeks actually...
 
I just called the doc to find out for you...

From day 1-5 I was on 30mg a day
Day 6-8 20mg a day

I was only on it for 8 days in total, not 2 weeks (sorry!!)

I know the my doc reduced the dosage for me because I was breastfeeding. If I wasn't breastfeeding, I would have had a stronger and longer dosage. He was really supportive of that, actually. And since my daughter was less than a week old at the time, it was incredibly difficult for me since I knew that if I couldn't breastfeed then, it would have probably meant that I wouldn't be able to at all...

So if anyone needs a good neurologist, I recommend Dr Jason Fong in Melbourne Plaza ;)
 
i use pura too...if you are into organic milk that is also readily available at Wellcome....can't remember the name off hand, but it's very clearly marked and cost $50 for a litre. Anyhow, have started with pura since my daughter just turned 1 and she seems to like it....
