Food to avoid

Hello,

Are there any foods to eat or avoid during the early part of pregnancy. I read that chinese people avoid pineapple and papaya, maybe it's too cooling for the body???

Any website that discusses the right diet during pregnancy? thanks.

I personally did not avoid much during my pregnancy. I was just conscious that i was getting a balanced diet and not too much on the sugar side. But i did stay away from "raw foods" like sushi as they tend to give me stomach upset and that is what needs to be avoided.
 
mamaS, I was told that I should have avoided nuts during my pregnancy, which may or may not explain the eczema that my son has, but then again, I was also told to eat lots of nuts by the in-law for baby's brain growth. So there's lots of conflicting information out there. . . but if I had to do it again, I would probably avoid nuts, just to be on the safe side.
 
Suggestions

Take the follwoing wiht a a grain of salt but I was told to avoid:
Papaya - research finds that raw papaya can lead to miscarriage, concern being that slightly underripe payapa can have an impact although my doctor said you need to eat a lot of it.

Liver - too much Vit A can lead to abnormalities

Unpasterized Cheese - can lead to still births, miscarriage (once again you would have to eat a good amount)

according to chinese culture you are to avoid "cold" and wet "sup yeet" things
like watermelon, mango, green bean dessert, banana, turnip, etc

also raw things and cold items.

according to my doctor i was to steer away from soft cheeses to avoid listeria which breeds in soft cheese and pate. do not eat liver due to the vitamin A, nuts due to allergies for the baby. sushi was alright as long as you go somewhere reputable (but i found that all of it is in the fridge anyways and how long it's been in there who knows) caffeine and the big fish which contain high levels of mercury. this is a big nono and he said that there has been a case where a woman ate swordfish everyday and her baby was born with mercury poisoning. so the big ones are like swordfish, shark, king mackerel, tuna. they recommend 12ounces of fish per week 6 ounces per serving. so only twice a week.
 
Towards the end is alright, but not during the first trimester - well, that's the chinese belief.

I was told to avoid snakes and mutton along with those already mentioned. According to my mom, watermelon and ice-cream should be avoided during the early stage of pregnancy, but should be eaten more in the third trimester since it would make labouring easier.
 
I agree with all of the above. And it seems that there isn't much left to eat. But on the safe side, I tried to follow those that make sense.

I was also told to avoid eating goose, duck, shrimp and crab - if you want your baby to have good skin. Since I was carrying a girl, I thought I might as well follow just to be save.
 
Hey, did you guys get the drink a lot of milk, so baby's skin will be, well what else, pearly white, and then eat tomatoes for rosy cheeks?

Of course, know a woman who swear that the reason her son is dark is because she drank too much tea while she was pregnant:haha:
 
I did research on this topic for my MPhil last year. Mutton is said to cause epilepsy, tofu is said to make the baby's complexion beautiful, as well as bird's nest.

I was told to avoid snake, shrimp, & crab; watermelons and other cooling fruit.

Told to avoid - frightening movies; moving house, hammering, sewing on the bed.

Things to do:

1) Buy a beautiful baby poster and think good thoughts

2) Walk a lot, especially up and down stairs

I ate bird's nest throughout my pregnancy. It helped me sleep better, be less stressful, and eased my sickness.

Birds nest is also good for the baby to have a good skin.

Did you cook it as soup? or the ready one in a bottle that you just spoon it out.

I would suggest taking some of these with a grain of salt. For example, I was told to avoid mutton because in Chinese it sounds very similar to epilepsy and therefore thought to cause epilepsy! Not very scientific approach...
 
Don't intend to go against what have been discussed here. But my relative who in on the bird nest business told me that Bird nest has no significant benefit other that help to clear the lung. The business is prosper due to all these beliefs that jack up the price.

I have 2 kids and I drank tea and coffee during my both pregnancy. My kids are fair though...not dark like coffee nor tea...heheh... Eat almost everything except those raw and unprocessed cheese.

I guess it is really depends on individual on what to and not to take i.e allergies, sensitive skin, general health, etc... etc...

I cooked my bird's nest with an electric crock pot. The ready ones are just the same but they're much more expensive.

I'd been eating bird's nest before my pregnancy, but its effect was most obvious when I was pregnant. Bird's nest is mainly protein and collagen. My father thinks I'm exaggerating it's beneficial effect, something like a placebo, but I can feel the difference when I was eating it while pregnant. I was less tired, slept better and less stressful. But make sure you buy the real ones. The cheaper ones are often better than the really expensive ones, which are made up of glue. Don't buy the shiny ones, which mean glue.

However, I won't advise giving a baby bird's nest, since he/she may be allergic to it, and too young to digest it.
 
My mom told me to avoid mutton and durian because they were very hot and not good for pregnancy. Mutton is eaten during winter for the sake of keeping warm, so it's hot.
 
when they say to avoid soft cheeses, does that include philadelphia cream cheese and mascopone?
