First Prenatal Visit Experience

Hi Everyone! I am 7-8 weeks pregnant (and new to HK) and had my first prenatal visit this morning. Prior to the visit, from all the readings, I was expecting a lengthy visit involving blood tests, discussions on family history, eating habits, etc. However, my visit was about 5 mins long! All they did was do a ultrasound, measured my blood pressure and I had a 5 min conversation with the doctor...is this standard in Hong Kong? Or should I be looking for a new doctor?

Thanks for all your feedback!

Hi,

This sounds familiar! If you are going through a public hospital I think this is the norm unless someone else has had another experience they want to share.

I'm going public and have monthly scans which take around 15 minutes. They did do blood tests early on - I was 12 weeks when I started hospital visits so yours must be coming soon.

You could arrange to see a private ob/gyno for additional info and questions. They may help put your mind at ease and give you some advice on vitamins, diet and so on.

Thanks for the feedback twontheway - but my doctor is private.

It sounds like I need to look for a new doctor. Does anyone have any recommendations?

You can try Dr. Fong Mun Ho in St. Paul Hospital, Causeway Bay. HK private dr. will assume you do the blood test in the public so you have to let them know your thought.

I have my first public appointment this Thursday and they told me not to eat before I go. Any idea what happens at the first appointment? I am 10 weeks and wondered if I can expect a scan or not? Or do I go ahead and book a private scan.

Thanks

Much appreciated Sweetblueberry for the info, was a big help - hope I get offered a scan as am a first time mum and want to know that everything is as it should be.

Mine was 1 minute long (with Clement Chan) which made me so mad inside because I was charged 830hkd for that! You def need to look for a better OB..I am also on a quest to find the best one for me..I will be going to Lam Man Ho on Oct 10 and another OB recommended by my sister is Wilfred Wong Se Hung.

Good luck to us finding the right doctor:-)

Thank you Aquarian!:-) I am now thinking to visit him before dr. Lam Man Ho. May I ask how much Dr Wilfred Wong charges?

Full disclosure: I only saw him once, towards the end of my pregnancy as I had been diagnosed with placenta previa and the public hospital drs never had time to sit and really discuss it with me. He explained it all, gave me a lot of good advice and his manner was very friendly and calming.

From what I remember the cost was $1600 - initial consultation fee + 4d ultrasound.

I see, thank you for letting me know.:) That is what my sister told me too that he's really thorough and will spend time explaining things to you.

Hi gielian,

Just wanted to know how your experience was with Dr Lam Man Ho. I am planning to visit him and would appreciate any advice on docs for first timers (my first visit to a gynac it will be) . Thanks!

Hi DeeVe, I did not visit Dr. Lam Man Ho anymore because I was very impressed with the service I got at dr Wong Se Hung's clinic :-) My friend who suggested dr lam man ho swears she loves him and is very patient in answering tons of questions.

Hi gielian,

Thanks for the quick reply. I really appreciate. I will consider to see Dr Lam Man Ho. Since its my first time visit to a gynac and im planning a family i need some one who has the time to listen and at the same time with good experience. Its difficult to decide reading reviews buts its helpful in many ways to be aware of treatment one can expect. Thanks a ton.
