Fetal Anomaly Scan Tsan Yuk

I am approaching my week 20 scan. I got it scheduled at Tsan Yuk. It's been 6 weeks since my down syndrome test with TSYH, without any result. Thus, I'm a bit wary of them, anyone care to share their experience with fetal anomaly scan in TSYH? Do I need to book private scan?

If you didn't hear anything about the downs screening it means the results are normal. I knew it's frustrating not to be 'told' but you have to trust them.

You don't need a private scan unless you feel you need a second opinion.

and if there is a problem, they will hunt you down to let you know. they never inform you if everything is ok.

So what kind of report should i expect for week 20 scan? How will they tell me? Verbal or written?

You probably will get a verbal on the spot comment from the ultrasound technician. Also be prepared to take it with a grain of salt and if there ARE any issues, get a 2nd opinion. I've heard horror stories about the technician being overly dramatic about what the potential issues are. 2nd opinions are so valuable!

Is there any checklist what will they check on baby development? Who knows they coveniently forget to tell me important stuff, n I can spot on that :D

You mean that they check for during the scan? It's quite complicated! Blood flow in the heart, organs in the right places and facing the right way that sort of thing. You'd need to be trained to understand an u/s image.

A trained sonographer will check your baby against developmental mllestones of a 20 week old fetus. Are vital organs developed for that stage etc. His/her trained eye will be able to judge that. Lots of measuring here & there. The two obgyns whom I've seen for my scans are quite vocal & they point & explain everything. You'll have to trust your sonographer/obgyn that they will do their job right.

They check a bunch of things - measure all the bones etc, look at internal organs, look for cleft lip etc... I've been to both public and private and the private docs will talk you through the entire thing, where as at the public hospital they tend to not say as much unless you ask... But of course they will tell you if there is anything worrying!

Hi :)

I had my 20 week scan 4 weeks ago.. It was great.

The ultrasound dr was fantastic, he was very thorough when explaining things to me and took time to answer my questions. Overall the experience was brilliant!

This has been the best part of my pergnancy so far.. try not to worry about the problems and just enjoy seeing your little one - he/she will be a lot bigger in this scan compared to your last!

Congratulations!

thank you sweet mamas.... Counting down to May 15..... I hope baby cooperate well... We're dying to know gender. It feels weird to always call him/her as baby. Sounds very impersonal
