Expensive Antenatal Package

I got my doctors fees for my antenatal package today and the prices seem over the top. If I were to choose a second class accomodation package (semi private room) a normal delivery is HKD45000 and a c-section HKD48000. This price is only for the doctor fees NOT including hospital fees, anaethetist fee nor paediatritian. I figure my bill will be close to HKD100,000. ( and no insurance coverage. I was thinking if its possible to negociate price with the doc. Or into my fifth month, should i look for someone less expensive??? Do any of you know a good OBGYN that is less pricey???

that seems to be quite pricey. I recently gave birth and the doctors fees came to around 22K, I chose a 3 person room, and was the only person in that room. The total package was around 54K including hospital fees, anaesthesologist fees, Paedatrician fees etc. I stayed for 4 and a half days.

I agree that sounds expensive. My OB (Dr Dawkins) had a package, including checkups and delivery, which came to about HK$24,000. My total bill including Dr Dawkins, hospital (private room at the Matilda), aneth, epi, paed (at the hospital), immunisations, medications etc was HK$76,000 for a normal delivery.

HK$100k, not even with a private room, (and no insurance, ouch) sounds a bit too much. I think you are right that your Dr is too expensive. Who are you seeing?

hi rosewood,

your prices seem much more reasonable than mine. how did you like your obgyn? would you recommend him/her? can you give me the breakdown of your pricing. was the 22k including the paediatrician fee and anaethetist?

hi jane01,

i am seeing Dr Alex Doo. I think he's a fantastic dr but just too expensive.

Hi Avi,

I am also seeing Dr. Doo. Are you talking about the Matilda Hospital's charges for the antenatal package? it sure do sound expensive.

My Dr didn't offer a package and we paid close to 20K in prenatal check ups and his fees for a normal delivery were 20K.

Avi,
Im seeing Dr Milton Leung and when hes out of town I see Dr Doo too. I know they usually deliver at the Adventist or Sanatorium...which hosp are u looking into ???

hi teeks and karishma,

i haven't decided which hospital to use use yet but the prices i am quoting are the doctors fees regardless of which hospital you choose. at their offices i believe that they are linked to 3 hospitals, Matilda, Adventist and HK Sanatorium. Their fees go up as per room you choose.

Karishma, from what i can remember i had a few appointments with m leung and he was more expensive than dr doo. you should enquire about his prices.

I hope you all are insured unlike me.

Hi Avi

I've been trying to work out costs too, and it's not easy!!

Here's where I've got to with the various options and possibilities (if anyone can see I'm missing anything obvious, I would be very grateful if you could alert me!). These are a rough guide only though...

Doctor's package (all prenatal visits and natural birth) $28,000

Hospital package (Matilda) $16,500 (standard 3-bed room, natural delivery) to 55,500 (private room, emergency caesar)

Epidural (including anesthetist) around $12,000

Mid-wife package (including antenatal classes, 6 postnatal home visits and on-call mid-wife) $6,800

Doula support during labour $2,900 (non-refundable deposit) + $2,900 post-labour

I'm not sure if I'm going to use all options, but I wanted to get some idea of each of these as we have no insurance either and need to be prepared.

Hope that helps...

thanks lia your list looks quite complete except for the paediatrician fee which can be btw 5-10k.
again your drs fees seems far reasonable than mine.

my question being, would it be advisable to look for a new ob after 5 months preggie??

Rosewwod,

Did the 22k include the ante natal checkups with ultrasound etc as well or was itonly for the delivery?

If so did it include the anethetists fee?

Hi Avi

My OB is Lucy Lord at Shui On. Her package is available up to 24 weeks (ie. you need to join the scheme any time before turning 24 weeks). Others may have a similar approach, but... you may be past this point, I'm not sure.

My OB's clinic does have a pay-as-you go pricelist of individual charges if you don't take a package, which could also be useful... I'm not sure of these off the top of my head, though.

I wouldn't change my OB at this stage (I'm 20 weeks), but that's because I'm really happy with her. You may not feel so strongly in which case a change may be good.

Good luck.

L.

I think that the most important thing about your doctor is that you trust him/her. I changed doctors at 31 weeks because the doctor I?d been seeing up until then started to say things that I wasn?t comfortable with. I decided to look around again and ended up with a doctor I was much happier with. I?ve known one or two women who changed doctors as late as 37 or 38 weeks for the same reason.

If cost of the doctor is a big issue for you have you considered the Hospital Authority hospitals?

I recently talked to a couple of nurses from the United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong. I was very impressed with their policy of giving all mothers and babies 30 minutes of uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact. It really is the best way to get breastfeeding off to a good start.

Best wishes,
Barb

Hi Avi

Sorry if this is hopelessly naive, but is the paediatrician you mention above involved at the hospital at/after the birth or after you've gone home with your baby...? I.e. when does the paediatrician come into play? And, where did you get your estimate of HKD5,000-10,000 from...?

Any info gratefully received!!

L.

hi lia,
don't worry about. i didn't know until my friend told me. after birth there is a paediatrician that checks up on your baby to make sure everything is ok. i'm not sure if your ob arranges to have one or if the hospital has it there already. the price is what my friend had to pay. i'll ask her again exactly how much she paid and get back to you.

You have to select your own Paed. The hospital will call yr Paed after the delivery and they'll come to check the baby and will visit every day while you're there.

Don't worry Avi, there are quite a few very good OBs out there who are a lot more reasonable.

Matilda have their own Ped. which cost friends HK$4,000 for their newborn to receive a standard post birth check up.

As for Drs. Dr Ho and Dr Dawkins both do all inclusive packages which cost HK$26,000. If you end up needing a C-section Dr Ho will charge you more but Dr Dawkins won't. Moreover, I know that if you join Dr Dawkin's package late in your pregnancy, the cost of any appointments, scans etc which you have not used will be deducted from the overall cost. I haven't used either of these doctors but have a number of friends who have used both and all parents absolutely adore them!!!

Rani, I'll understand if you feel the need to edit my last comment.
Re: Lucy Lord she is the one OB that a midwife whom I know personally recomended I keep away from due to her inability to cope well with emergencies. I also know quite a number of mums who had straightforward births with her during which she shocked them with her bedside manner - all are lawyers too so not delicate by nature.

Hi everyone,
Just wanting to share my experience on this topic.

Dr Milton Leung delivered my baby last year. The total cost of the delivery was $150K. This included Dr Leung ($52K for c-sect), pediatrician ($15K), Anesthetist ($12K), hospital stay at the Matilda private rm ($55K for emergency c-sect), and Dr Leung & Dr Doo's post natal visits.
I was told that the delivery cost was regardless the type of room I would choose.

I was indeed lucky to be covered by insurance. However, putting aside the ob-gyn costs, from the first visit I felt so comfortable seen by Dr Leung and his other partners, Dr Doo & Dr Choy. The staff at the clinic are really friendly. Dr Doo & Dr Choy's costs are slightly cheaper then Dr Leung, both for the delivery and consultations.

The pediatrician cost covered the visits to check my baby whilst we were in the hospital for 5 days. He could not make it during the delivery, though. I still wonder whether the cost would be the same.

The 22K doctors fee was just for the delivery of the baby including the use of forceps, plus daily visits to the hospital (sometimes several times a day) - I stayed 4 and a half days. . Paedatrician charge was around $2400K dollars which included 4 daily visits to the hospital (the paeditrican was recommended by my doctor, likewise, the anaethaesist was also recommended by my doctor). Anaethesist/epidural charge was $7k, the hospital package was $12400, the hospital also charged $6K for the epidural, plus around $4K for other misc hospital costs such as use of forceps, foetal monitor, hearing test, admission fee, inducement, medicine etc.

Antenatal was a separate charge - around 1000 dollars per visit, and not included in the $54K price quotede earlier.

Hope this helps...
