Expats making a will in HK

This is such a useful thread. My husband and I really need to get this sorted too.

Freddiebiscuit, could you please pm me the details of the solicitor you recommend as I'd also like to contact them.

Just had our wills (my husband's and mine in similar form) signed and sealed yesterday.

It covers guardianship for our child(ren), executors of our wills, responsibilities of the executors, how assets will be handled/distributed in the various circumstances etc.

While it is not necessary, for expedience the lawyer advised to have separate wills set up in countries where assets are held so that it won't take a lengthy period for probate and grant to be given.

Cost us HKD3,800 for both wills.

Sure thing ladies!!

Let me just give the lawyer a heads up first. Do you mind that they are a local (HK) law firm?

I was referred to her as she gave a talk to the Rotary Club on Wills.

That is what all the lawyers keep telling me too but from my discussions with the probate office (and grilling of Will writing company) it is simply not always true. Wills from the following are accepted here.

Here is exactly what the probate office told me: "A general Grant issued by any of the following designated countries (places) may be resealed in Hong Kong (without leave of the Registrar):
United Kingdom
Singapore
Sri Lanka
Victoria and South Australia and the Northern Territory of Australia
The Australian States of Tasmania
New Zealand"

I still don't have all the answers but am getting closer!

i'm not sure if we need one done yet but would like the contact details in case we do, so obiwan could you pm me the details too?

thanks!
