Excma

Our 3 month old has just had a really bad case of excma around her neck. It looks so sore but doesn't seem to bother her too much. Does anyone have any advice about treating it and what might cause/trigger it? Would love to hear other peoples experiences and advice. Thanks

Mine is almost 4 months and he's Eczema too. At first he only had rashes on his neck, then we spotted some on his shoulders and inside the folds. One time his face was all red and dry too. It appears that low humidity makes the problem worse. We took him to the Pd who advised us to change formula to Nestle Na H.A. which is supposed to be less 'heated'. We have to make sure the house is dust free as it irritates his skin. All cotton clothing is a must. Use liquid instead of powder form detergent (for his clothes) as the powder may not dissolve properly and again irritates skin. And don't bath the baby in hot water. The Pd gave us lotion to put on the affected areas too.

You'll find more info from here:

When my girl was about 5 -6 months old, she developed this dry rash on her face. As it was winter then, we thought that it was due to the dry weather and applied various "branded" baby facial cream on the rash. Sadly, the rash did not go away and instead seem to have gotton worse.. the patch became bigger, was scaly and red..

Then I remembered a friend told me that her baby's eczema was cured by a "locally" produced face cream... and "whooola'' it really cured my girl's rash within two days... now my girl is 19months old and is still using the cream on her face everyday..

For those who want to give it a try (when all things failed and when we dont want to be applying steroid on their faces), the brand is call "Two Girls" .. their website is [email protected]

Hope it helps!

I was breast feeding my son when his excema developed. I continued to breastfeed and did not start him on solids 'till 5 months. We tried a ton of different creams and bath oils all no good.

It was not 'till he was 12 months old and we tried to give him cows milk and he had an immediate reaction we realised that he has multiple food allergies. (He was tested and diagnosed by our GP and a private Allegist, with a blood test and then skin prick tests).

The allergist said that if I had consulted his initially his advice would have to me been to stop eating any dairy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts ands shell fish whilst breast feeding.

My son now does not consumme any of the foods he is allergic to and we used a cream called "Diprobase". It's not a steroid cream, only an moisturiser. We have to order it in especially via Mannings or Watsons. Although they do sell small tubes in the Mannings in the Princes Building.

We also put "Oilatum" in his his bath to moisurise his skin and "Epsom Salts" which are supposed to soften the water and therefore not dry the skin out so much.

Hope this helps.

Pd gave us Elidel to put on the affected areas. Used it for 3 days and the rashes were all gone.

ELT, checked out Elidel on the web and they recomend it for children of 2 years and above, thought you might like to know.

try ovus cream from optimum health centre -tel. 28824848 in causeway bay & central

my baby had a very bad case of excema, nothing worked except steroid cream, which i regrettably gave her when she was 9 mths old. the rash came back 6 mths later, i refused to give steroid but nothing batural i tried helped. until my girls homeopath recommended this cream. it healed in a week. all natural, a bit pricey $320 for 45g, but all worth it.

ninahudd, thanks.

Yes, I did and I consulted 2 pds in HK who both said it is ok to use. The instruction in the package said it is safe to use on infants too. Wonder if it is because different countries have different standards...

ELT, glad you checked too, just being cautious.

Jo Bowd, where do you get the Oilatum and Epsom Salts from? Our bubs has had another flare up only 2 or 3 weeks after the last one. Pulling our hair out trying to get it sorted and really dont want to use steroid cream again (especially not so soon).

Rose Hip Oil

One other thing I could recommend is pure rose hip oil. It stains clothing a bit, but I found that it was very effective. While it didn't make the eczema go away completely, it truly kept it manageable and at times, the ezcema would be dormant for longer periods of time. You need to massage it into the skin, btw. My child has been eczema free for some time.

my son is 4 months old and has eczema. My pd recommended a dermatologist who prescribes 2 baths per day with oilatum and aqueous cream followed by cetaphil and steriods. Everyone i have spoken with tells me that we should decrease the number of baths. I am reluctant to keep using steriods but it's difficult not to especially around the chin area where it's extra dry because he is drooling. I'm thinking of changing formulas from Enfamil to something else. Can anyone recommend a formula that's worked? Also, any good dermatologists out there for babies? thanks.

yky
that's the number to call. his name is dr.yuan. he's a bit extreme regarding vaccinations, but very good in treating children.

hi yky

My son also has eczema. He is going to be 5 months in a week.
His case is not too bad as he only has rashes on his body and face. There were a couple times when he had slight inflammation but we could always control the situation after applied non-steroid medicated cream (we would only use the steroid cream when he is super itchy or when his skin is inflammed). I have heard cases where the mum found blood all over the clothes, so we are grateful our's is just very irritated and look 'sun-burned' every now and then. We see 2 pds and they both reassured us that most babies who suffered from eczema would be free from it after 6 to 12 months.

Regarding the medicated cream, we are using Elidel which is a controversal topic... some tests showed that Elidel can cause skin cancer so it is not recommended for children below 2 yrs' of age. That's what it says in the manufacturer website too. However, on the package of the cream I got in HK, it says it is safe for infants. I checked with the 2 pds we go to and they both said there is nothing to worried about. One of the pds said the test result was based on long term exposure to huge dosage so it is not reflective of actual scenarios where we'd just use it for a few days and only when there's outbreak of rashes. He also said Elidel when released was answer to a lot of prayers from people who suffered from eczema as it is the most effective non-steroid cream. If you search on the Internet, you will find very extreme views about the cream.

I don't feel comfortable recommending Elidel because some says it should not be used on infants but I would strongly recommend parents whose infants has eczema to ask their pds about it... just to know more and have an option aside from creams with steroid.

ELT, thanks. I'll ask my pd and dermatologis about Elidel. Are you not seeing a dermatologist? My pd referred us to a dermatologist. The dermatologist recommended two baths using aqueous cream and Cetaphil as well as steriods for the affected areas. How often do you bathe your son?

Sean's eczema isn't too bad, he has rashes only when the weather changes and we are always able to control the condition. Our pds and friends with kids keep telling us that the eczema would go away (just like baby acne and cradle cap) when he's older, so we never considered going to a dermatologist.

We bath him every other day when he has an outbreak. Otherwise daily in luke warm water, with a Japanese brand bathing powder (green color, and supposed to be good for infants with eczema) and a few drops of baby oil. We then massage him with thick layer of aqueous. His face is quite dry so we put aqueous on him every few hours, usually when he's having his nap or drinking milk. We would use vaselin behind the knees, around the ankles, wherever it is very dry.

Used Bran shampoo and conditioner when he had cadle cap but now that he's free from it (yay!), we just use the same water on his hair.

We used to bath him daily but changed the routine as don't want to dry him out. I heard suggestions about daily quick 2-min baths in water around 37 degrees followed by moisturizers while the skin is still damp -- I think this makes sense as skin absorbs the moisturizer better while the skin is still a bit damp. But not sure objective of two baths...

Have any of you tried going to the homeopaths at IMI? I suffered from eczema all my life and tried EVERYTHING. Finally found out I am allergic to a number of things and once I knew, it cleared up COMPLETLY. Try not to use steroid creams if necessary as I have heard that they get stuck in your liver...I must have tubes of the stuff in mine!!
