Engorgement and two small lumps

I have to express currently and cannot give the milk to the baby as I have a bad virus and on medication. Baby is on formula currently and also had been in hospital for jaundice.

Anyway, I should be able to feed again on Monday night considering I just had an injection last night. They say the medication should clear from my body by 72 hrs. Anyway, one breast is quite hard on the inner side(near the under arm) and I can also feel one or two small lumps. What should I do? I know if I keep on pumping too much it will get worst as this means I am trying to increase the supply. I have tried massaging towards the nipple and then pumping, but there is not much relief and I feel it is getting worst. What should I do?

Thanks!

Even though you`re worried about increasing your milk supply, I think it`s more important to pump that milk that`s sitting in your breast right out before it becomes infected.
Also a hot compress or hot shower should help loosen things up a bit.

Dear Mrs Momo,

Please let me know the medication you are on. As it has been given in an injection it is likely that it isn't orally available. If this is the case than you can breastfeed without worry.

Call me on 2548-7636 and I'll try to find out about the medication.

In the meantime use warm compresses before pumping or expressing. Try expressing in the shower or bath. It is important to feel comfortable at all times. If you start to feel too full then pump or hand express until you feel good again.

Best wishes,
SARAH
