Economic Recession, the Upside?

Not sure if there really is an update to the recession 
A friend of mine who had a divorce last year used up his last penny on the divorce settlement as their assets were below cost due to the recession. They decided that it wasn't worthwhile to liquidate them, so the husband ended up paying the entire settlement to his wife with his cash savings. Shortly after that, he lost his job ... Sigh.

But many people are choosing to stick with it longer (which may heighten the chances of actually working something out) just because it's not as financially convenient to get divorced--I guess if your friends actually had the money in order to go through with a divorce then they weren't in that of dire straights to begin with--but anyway, if your friend lost his job then at least he was penniless and single and not penniless with a wife--there's a big difference.
