Due November 2014

Hello! It is my first pregnancy and my first time in Geobaby! I am actually seeking some advice here. I just moved to HK in Feb and found out that I am pregnant 2 days back through a GP. Well I was really excited at first and then got anxious and nervous because I have no clue how is it like being pregnant and giving birth, especially in a foreign land without friends and my mum to guide me through.

I am actually considering between giving birth in Singapore (where I am from) or here in Hong Kong, and is weighing my options now. However, first thing first, what is my next step moving forward? the GP told me that I could either go to a private doctor or to go a government hospital. I went to research and found out that the first antenatal at a government hospital is scheduled at week 10, is it normal to have the first checkup so late into the pregnancy? I thought there should be test done earlier to check my health conditions, such as which vitamins I am lacking in etc...

Could someone pls advice me what should I do next? Should I arrange for a private doctor first, and how far into the pregnancy would they usually want to see me? As this is my first, I am extremely nervous and some assurance from the doctor would do me some good :)

Hello everyone! congratulations on your beautiful babies!

I am also very new to HK, we moved here in December and in January we got pregnant! So, I am very very new to the city, system and the pregnancy :)

I have been to several prenatal sessions with my doctor Eric Lee. I am extremely happy with him, he is very professional, knowledgable, very polite and caring doctor. He makes me feel safe. He would never rush you out or be rude...my husband was also very happy with him. I had my first visit at 5 weeks in. He prescribed me prenatal vitamins and we also did some blood work to check if my hormone levels are good. He also gave me his personal number, to make sure that I always can contact him if anything goes wrong. I highly recommend Dr. Lee...he has very positive attitude and personality, but most importantly he knows what he is doing.

I would love to make friends! I don't work at the moment...I am trying to rest as much as possible (nausea, dizziness, fatigue, extremely bloated and etc.)...if there is anyone in similar situation who lives not far from Kennedy Town I would be more than happy to meet up for lunch or a cup of tea in the neighbourhood :)

I am currently around 10 weeks, due in mid October. I am 34 and this is our first baby, so I am trying to be very careful with this pregnancy.

Wish everyone healthy and happy pregnancy!

Yulia

Congratulations Charieis!

Did your GP give you any folic acid? If he didn't not to worry as you can buy some at any pharmacy and you can take a prenatal vitamin too. I would wait until you're 7-8 weeks to visit an OBGYN. They will be able to do a scan and hear baby's hearbeat. There's a list of Drs in the GeoBaby directory, you can search the forum for reviews.

Wish you to have a nice get together tomorrow!!!

a quick question- I was about to join the facebook group mentioned above but will my friends be able to see that I have joined the Due Date group and therefore know I am pregnant? (I don't plan of telling people until I get to 3 month mark). I know it says private group but I don't know how it will appear? thanks!

by the way, for those wondering what options they have... this is my 2 cents worth, having been pregnant and given birth in HK 18 months ago in Queen Elizabeth, public hospital.
I persoanlly had a great experience with them. I was warned to expect no attention or bedside manner unless something goes wrong, and that's pretty much what I got. The antenatal checks can be long and tedious waits, followed by a 30 second consult, but like I said, they do it so often, they know what they are doing and if they need to see you more they will. I coupled it last time with a few private scans and then a package with the Family Zone, Yvonne Heavyside, for when I came out of hospital. We probably paid a total of 350HKD for hospital birth, 2000 antenatal classes, 4000 Family Zone Package. This time Im not sure what private services we will pay for but I just wanted to let you know that the Public Hospitals aren't as bad as you hear (I hope I haven't just cursed myself for this pregnancy!)
there you go! :-)

Loobylou that was the exact same thing i wanted to ask lol. I clicked then quickly canceled it.

Yes they will be able to see you've joined. Best to wait a couple more weeks. :)

Thank you Rani for the advice! I went to Dr Catherine Cheung today as I was having slight cramps and was worried when my friend said that she lost her baby because of that. She said it is common and prescribed me some folic acid and Algae DHA oil tablets, and asked me to return when I am in my 7th week for an ultrasound.

I am wondering if it is safe to travel in the first trimester? I asked the nurse and she said it is not advisable and I may miscarriage. However I read that many people continued with their travel plans with no ill effects. I booked my ticket to return to Singapore on 8th March before I knew I am pregnant and am scheduled for an internal ultrasound on the 7th. Do you think it is advisable to have the ultrasound date and travel date so close together?? I am not sure how invasive internal ultrasound is.

I am really keen to join you ladies for dinner tomorrow but I don't think I can make it. Update if there is a second meet-up coming up!

Hi chareis,
As far as I know you can absolutely continue your work/ life as normal ( obviously removing certain foods/ alcohol etc).
I travelled throughout with last pregnancy and had no problems. I don't think travel will in anyway cause a mid carriage but of course they can happen at any time to anyone :-(
The advice they give us rest if you need to and be active f your body requires- listen to your body basically. My fried who is pregnant with twins has also travelled throughout her pregnancy so I wouldn't cancel your trip :-)
Internal ultrasound is not pleasant but also doesn't harm you or the baby either. (Sorry to be crude but they say its fine to have sex an that thing is a lot smaller!)
Hope tht helps. I'm no expert obviously- just repeating what I believe/ have been told :-)
Good luck

Omg i just did a massive reply and it didn't go through and now lost! Ahhhh

Thank you loobylou for the assurance! My friend's sister who is flying with SQ flew throughout the first 3 months and her baby is close to 2 yr old now :). I guess I just have to relax and not get overly stressed over small matters

Hi ladies,

Massive congratulations. This is my first pregnancy and would love to meet up with some ladies in the same situation. I’m not new to Hong Kong (been here for 5 years), but definitely new to the system and pregnancy. I’m currently struggling with morning sickness and teenage like acne, both of which started at the 7 week mark.

I’m due mid October and I’m thinking of going half private and half public. I live in Central so would give birth at QMH.

Charieis, my Ob-gyn said it’s fine for me to fly. Your flight is relatively short, so you should be fine, but at the end of the day it's a personal decision. I’m currently 9 weeks and flying to Australia on Friday and then back to Hong Kong a week later. That said, I have a wedding to attend as Maid of Honour and I refuse to miss it, so will do whatever it takes to endure the trip.

Just a reminder ladies, dinner is at 7:30pm at the Common Room. See you tonight. Table booked in my name

Thanks Rani. Unfortunately I'm feeling pretty ordinary this evening, so it's probably a good idea I stay home. I wouldn't want to throw up at your ladies dinner :) Hopefully this phase passes soon. Look forward to meeting soon.

No worries rest up and see you at the next one.
