Dr Lam Yung Hang

I know of someone who thinks very highly of him. I, however, was very unimpressed by the one experience I had of him. I had an appointment with him to do a complete scan at about 20 weeks as he is supposed to a specialist in looking out for abnormalities. First he walked in and mistook us for another couple, giving us a scare by asking us if we were the couple with thalassemia. Then after asking us a couple of questions he bounced out of the room for 5 mins. Then he came in again and asked the nurse to set me up for the scan and then promptly disappeared for another 10 mins. While he was doing the scan, the nurse came in, whispered something in his ear and then he went away again for another 5 mins. Upon completion of the scan when he concluded that the foetus was fine, I barely had time to ask him one question, which he answered with his back to me as he was rushing out of the room. If I were to give him the benefit of the doubt it would be to say that perhaps I was a one off patient, only in for a scan and that he prob. has more time to give to patients who are with him for the entire pregnancy. But seeing as my scan cost $1200, I believe I didn't get my money's worth of attention. That clinic that he practises in also comes across as a very commercially inclined practice.
 
I know this is an old post. I have a recent experience with him and I am totally agree with JOJO.

I had an appointment with him for my 20 weeks scan (structure/anatomy scan), he canceled at the last minute (1 hour before the appointment time) I was so disappointed, suppose this is the first time my husband get to see his baby.
Then reschedule the appointment for few days later. I arrived 15 mins before the appointment time but he was late for 1 hour.
After the nurse prep me for the scan, I still have to wait for him for another 10-15 mins. The scan was very brief and fast at the end he said everything fine, baby is fine. And ask me to wait for the report and another 30 minutes wait.
I paid $2000 for the scan which include DVD, report, and ultrasound pictures plus 1 4D picture.
After I arrive home and watch DVD, it only recorded for 15 seconds!
I feel like I went to PUBLIC for scan but I have to pay $2000! with all the waiting time and no DVD I feel so disappointed.

I am seeing Dr. Lam privately and I think he's nice. It's a cash only place(!) and very busy but the facilities are top notch, the scan quality is excellent and he answers questions.
 
had him for 2 pregnancies - 2010 and 2011 - very professional, succint...yes, but if you have any questions he'll answer. gave me as much time as i needed...wasn't alot since it was my 2nd and 3rd...his scans are top notch and he is very thorough. 2 other scans said baby #2 had downs, he was my 3rd opinion and he was 100% my baby didnt have downs at all - no indications what so ever...believe it comes down to his skill and the machines at his office. my baby is find and healthy and no downs. he even told me not to waste money to get the blood test as it was not needed!

In the doctor's defense, this is quite normal for an OB/GYN as his patients do go into labour and have emergencies during the day when a doctor is seeing other patients at his office. Normal protocol would be to cancel an appointment on short notice of another patient has an emergency or is in labour.
 
I am sorry you had a bad experience with him. I am one who highly recommends him for complicated scans and both my OBs recommended him for the 12 and 20 week scans. All the popular ones are busy and all expensive. If it was me, I would have been firmer in getting my questions answered. You are right to make sure you get adequate time with the dr for the money you are spending.

But all docs have the same issue surely? You won't find a doc where you are his only patient! And I assume you would also expect a doc to cancel his arranged appointments if you happened to go in to labour on a Tuesday afternoon at 2pm, say when he was due to see Mrs X, Y and Z. Or would you be happy that he waited until end of clinic and came and saw you afterwards, by which point you may have had the baby?!
 
I also went to Dr Lam for my special scans and was warned beforehand that he did not have the greatest bedside manner and was impatient with questions. However when I did see him I found him perfectly fine. He was thorough during each scan, telling you which body part you're looking at and if everything looks on track, and he answered our questions professionally.

Most importantly, during our 4D structural scan at 27 weeks I sought his opinion on some symptoms that I was worried about (this was a third opinion, as I'd already consulted my own obgyn and was also seen by doctors at QMH - both said I was fine and shouldn't worry), and Dr Lam was the one who was thorough enough not to dismiss my concerns and then discovered that I had a weak cervix and was already effacing with a high risk of preterm labour! He had me go back to QMH to get treated immediately; after steroids and tocolytics I ended up spending a month in the hospital on bed rest and being monitored. I'm still on bed rest at home now and am happy to say that I'm now past 35 weeks!

So in summary, I am extremely grateful that Dr Lam discovered my problem when at least two other doctors didn't. Yes his practice does seem like a factory at times and he may not have all the time in the world to chat when he thinks your pregnancy is going smoothly, but when he thinks something is wrong he really steps up.

My point was that pretty all OBGYNs do this. They cannot predict when their other patients will go into labour or have complications requiring immediate attention during the day. Chosing another OB will not alleviate this issue - it happens with all of them.

Your other option is to go through the public system. Less likely that you will have appointments actually cancelled, but you won't get to chose your doctor, will likely see different doctors at each check and have no control over who delivers your baby.
 
I would have suspected that you would have that problem LESS with Dr Lam compared with other doctors. Since he specialises in prenatal diagnostics, many of his patients will not deliver with him. If you go to someone who only sees patients if they will deliver with them, that situation would be far more frequent.
