hi Anyone Have any experience with Dr Jimmy Mak at Hk Baptist hospital?
What is he like? his charges?

Is Hongkong baptist a good hospital to give birth in?
anyone stay in the standard ( 6 - 12 beds) or standard plus 3 beds, semi private beds ?

is it true if u are in a shared room, you cant bring the baby in - and hubbie cant hold baby? only view via the glass window?

any information - greatly appreciated!

:haha:

Don't know anything about the maternity wards in the Baptist hospital, but my husband was in their twice for an operation. He was on a private, 6 person ward. We were both impressed with the hospital.

Hi Ninimo -- It looks like we are taking similar paths! I found this thread looking up Dr. Mak.
I've seen him twice for pre-natal check-ups, since my case is still considered (fingers crossed) high-risk.
I think he charges HK $250 for consultation, HK $700 for scan. I also got some medicine, so my bill came to a little over HK $1,000.
So far, he seems fine. A little brisk and perfunctory, but also moderate. He's not one of those scare-you-to-death doctors who lecture you on everything that might go wrong.
He just told me to take it easy. Eating right, resting and taking my meds is all I can do. I feel better with him.
I went up to Baptist's maternity wards (which are not as new and nice as the ward Dr. Mak is in) but they were SO busy that they couldn't show me any rooms or spend time with me. I'll wait a few more weeks and, if all is stable, ask them more questions about delivery, etc.
Good luck!

hi gracey! hello again! hahah.. great all is going well w u and bb!
i have been seeing him a few times now.. and i paid my deposit of 6000 to reserve a bed etc!
he is v nice but yeah super busy as they have many mainlanders there too.... he also told me not to worry etc...
i did my oscar test there too...

u didnt continue w yr previous doc for delivery too etc? after all u have gone thur w yr previous doc? and he/she has all yr records etc..

my sis also gave birth there last year. and she will also be again giving birth there in the next 2 weeks so i will have a look again at the beds etc/rooms!

i will go see him again prob next week!!
take good care of yrself!

Hi Ninimo, Congrats to you, too! Who knows? Maybe we'll bump into each other at the waiting room.
I switched doctors bc my first is mostly a fertility specialist. He also seems to prefer C-sections, and I'm hoping for natural birth. His nurse tried to push me to book a C-section the day of my positive pregnancy test.
This doctor is very cautious (maybe right for some) but we were freaked by his negative diagnosis and prescription of lots of injections and bedrest.
Don't get me wrong. I'm grateful for doctor #1 for getting us preggers. But Dr. Mak seems more relaxed, which suits us better.
We always thought we'd deliver at Baptist, so why not do all the prenatal stuff at the same place?
Transfering records wasn't a big deal -- the nurse just made copies.
Wow, your sister is fertile! :) Good luck to you both!

Hi ninimo & Gracey,

congrats to both of you! Although I am not with Dr Mak, but I had myself booked a bed at Baptist too! Wonder you can share with us more when your sis give birth after 2 weeks, ninimo? Any info will be good! Cheers!

hi ya girls
surprising my sis is still not in labour yet! she is 39 week and a bit now!! so still waiting.. 2nd bb!
Both with dr Mak.... hes good doc, quite patient and informative and makes u at ease!
I hve paid my deposit.. the rooms.. u cant pick yet until u are like nearly due in. as they dont know what rooms are avaialble until then.. i have been there for several check s up.. did my oscar test few weeks ago there.. all is good.. they did the scan, then blood test .. the nurses are all good and helpful.. ..

mavislopsp and gracey when are u guys due?

yes, the nurses are very good. dr. mak is polite, but quite brief, but the nurses are full of good advice.
i'm due later than you -- late aug or sept 1. so i have time.
it's too bad they don't let you book a room earlier. it does seem awfully crowded and (no disrespect meant) filled with mainlanders.

hi girls how are u feeling?
in a way its great to finally be pregnant.. but then now there are diff worries! haha right?
i am going on to week 16!!! i cant wait till if feel bb kicking or so. that will be more assuring! yeah i know what u mean..the hospial is full of mainlanders... seems only mainlanders... and they are v noisy!

mavislopsp.. take it easy... april 23.. a few months to go!! is it a boy or girl?

thanks ninimo! I will try to take things easy... n yes it is fun to feel the baby's kick, i first felt the kick ard 20 weeks, n it is so amazing n I am watching my tummy everyday to see the wave my baby created! It's fun! :) We don't know the sex yet, we told the doctor not to tell us, as long baby is healthy.... :)

hi girls....
i am heading in to week 17!! times is flying by!!

cant wait for the kicks!! havent felt anything yet!! my sis is turning in to week 42 this week.. she has booked in for c section for this fri/sat w dr mak! keep u posted!

Good luck to your sister. Is she doing C-section bc she's late? Or because she decided to in advance? Anyway, good luck to her and happy new year! :)

hi all...
happy new year! all the best..... for the rabbit year! we be having a rabbit bb!!
my sis finally gave birth on the friday, 2nd day of the chinese new year!
BB and her are well.. she went in to hospital around 3 am,.. and had to call the doctor in etc... and had c section.... as according to her.. she was in pain already! due to the timing and the chinese newe year holidays, her room rate and hospital charges are going to be a lot higher, double? not sure exactly!
bb is 3.55 kg.. and my sis is well... she said not sore and recovering well! could already get off the bed on the 2nd day!

hope u girls are well!

tks!! gracey how re u feeling? how many weeks now??
i am heading in to week 18! i think i might have felt a bb kick last nite! a proper first one! but of coz i am still not 100% sure.. it feels like someone flicked me! but since no one else was around.. i assume its the BB!!!

Back to my sis .... i forgot to mention she stayed in the private single room.. not the deluxe as there is only 2 of those and they were all booked out! only the single rooms allow the bb to be wheeled in to the room and then the mother and visitors etcc can all hold, see, touch the bb.. also the mom can breast feed etcc.. and they dont take the bb until u tell them to! they also taught/helped my sis to breast feed as well!

the nurses were all v good..

Hi ninimo,

Congratulations to your sis! Guess you must be enjoying the baby kick now! :)

By the way, is your brother in-law allowed in the operating theatre? Can you help find out the total bill from your sister? Although it is during CNY period, we could use it as a guideline... Thanks!

hi ya.. bro in law was allowed in.... total bill was around 120k... a bit more expensive than usual coz of the CNY period..... and she was in the private rooms..... only private/deluxe private rooms allow the bb to be wheeled in... all other rooms. u have to walk out to see bb or feed bb in the feeding room!

how are u girls doing?

hi ninimo, thank you for the info!

By the way, I did not pass the glucose tolerance test. According to the hospital, my reading are slightly higher than the standard. I seen the nutrition last week and she gave me the meal list to follow for a week, and I need to admit to the hospital on this coming friday, to let them carried out the test again each time after meals. They also want me to rent the glucose meter to measure my glucose level at home daily. Frankly, i dont really feel like going. It's so troublesome... and according to them, I am not serious case, just slightly over normal.

Did anyone have the same experience? Any advice?
