I just found myself pregnant & my friends recommended to consult Dr. Ghosh. Is he good? Heard that he only serves at Matilda Hospital... How much will he charge for vaginal delivery or c-section...?

Rani...
Thanks for your information...
With my body health condition, I perfer having C-section...
But as my insurance doesn't cover maternity...
Hahahaha.. I think it's better for me to save up some more $$$....

I don't think Dr. Ghosh prefers c-sections - he will however recommend one if you need it. I had my baby 4 months ago and although I have a medical history that normally always leads to c-section, he still tried for a vaginal delivery till the very end. I think he's a fab. doctor. He delivers at Matilda, Canossa and Adventist but prefers Matilda as he and his anaesthesia guy actually live there - so in case of an emergency he will be there immediately.

Glad he's changed. When I had D four years ago, he was quite clear about his pref to c-section. He even asked a couple of moms in my pregnancy group (all first time moms) why they wanted to go through the pain of a natural and tried to convince them to schedule c-sections.

I saw Dr. Ghosh and I think he is the best in town ! He is extremely experienced and cautious. I heard that he actually prefers natural ways of doing things. I wanted a vaginal delivery and he totally supported me and didn't ask me to have a c-section. I think you are in good hands ! :bighug

Agree, you are in very good hands. I did end up having an emergency c-section, but he allowed me to try a natural delivery over 40 hours first and he in no way tried to encourage me to go down the c-section route during that time or during my pre-natal visits. He is extremely relaxed with you but cautious at the same time and I would not hesitate to recommend him. He convinced me to go to the Matilda as he lives on site, but he will deliver at other hospitals. Like all OB/GYN in Hong Kong, be prepared to have your pre-natal visits delayed/re-scheduled as he is very busy but 110% worth it!

Good luck :burnout:

Gosh camp vs Lord camp :-)

I "compared" my experience with some friends of mine who are Dr Ghosh patients and I stick to my choice of Dr Lucy Lord. She also serves in Matilda & Adventis and she's been great to me. As a the "expat-friendly" doctors in HK she is very aware of the patients choices and wishes. I wanted to try the natural way and only have a C-section in case of emergency. I had a long delivery (but painless thanks to her) and a beautiful baby born naturally nearly one year ago.
We are now trying to have a #2 and I cant imagine to go through that with somebody else than her !!

Dr Arabinda Ghosh

My experience is that he doesn't know his profession well and is highly egoistic and commercially oriented. He runs his practice on confusion. I have decided never to go to him again.

I couldn't disagree more with the last poster. Dr Ghosh never displayed any behaviour that was even close to egotistic in any of my visits and at all times encourages me to have a stress free and calm pregnancy by never letting me sweat the small stuff. He has a wonderful, calm prescence with a great sense of humour. He 100% knows his profession, he is a brilliant sonographer and helped me try all sorts of technques to turn my breech baby, who never turned. He offered to still perform a natural delivery as he is one of the only doctors who will deliver a breech baby naturally, but we chose to have a c-section. I NEVER exerperienced even a skerric of pain from start to finish, was up the next day, walking my dogs back at home with the baby pram day 5. He is brilliant at c-sections and I will definitely go to him for my 2nd.

Dr. Ghosh is my doctor as well. I have not yet delivered with him, but I chose him based on my 3 other girlfriends who had delivered with him - 2 vaginally and 1 c-section. They LOVED him and raved about him and their experience delivering with him.

Also meant to add, I chose Ghosh over Dr. Lucy Lord not because of expertise (both are fantatastic!), but because I needed someone not so rough around the edges....

I similarly couldn't disagree more with the post from earlier today. We had our first baby (delivered vaginally) with Dr. Ghosh a few months ago and thought he was fabulous.

This is the first time I have ever heard anything approaching criticism of his knowledge the profession. I would be curious to hear what the basis for that is.

To reiterate some things I have posted before:

I never once felt that he had a preference for delivering via C-section. I had heard that HK doctors generally are very pro C-section and so raised this with him in our very first appointment and that was the first and last time it ever came up.

I am a slightly older mom and we agonized over whether or not to do an amnio. Dr. Ghosh could not have been more supportive and patient with us - we had detailed discussions about the results of the big ultrasound scan (sorry, can't remember what it is called), my and my husbands medical histories etc. We ultimately decided not to do the amnio and he was incredibly supportive. He was always highly professional and and provided thoughtful answers to all of our medical questions.

If what was meant by confusion is that there can be a long wait sometimes, then yes, you do often have a long wait in the waiting room (in my experience, up to 1 hour, usually 30 min). However, the time he took with us at each an every appointment to point out things on the ultrasound and answer all of our questions was worth every minute of the wait.

Assuming we are in HK when we have our next child, we will definitely go back to Dr Ghosh.

I had a Ventouse delivery by Dr. Ghosh this past July. My husband and I are extremely pleased with Dr. Ghosh throughout the pregnancy and labor. He has never once pushed me towards a C-section and has only encouraged me to a normal delivery. The only complaint I can think of is the hour-long wait during each appointment due to overcrowdedness in his clinic.

I have no hesitation to go back to Dr. Ghosh for my subsequent pregnancies!

Clearly this is not a real post. I mean, who decides to make their first post such a scathing attack on someone? Probably just another obstetrician (or one of their lackeys more likely) tired of Ghosh's success in HK. To say that he doesn't know his profession well is nonsense. He worked for many years in Queen Mary before going out on his own.

I've had two babies in HK. The second was with Ghosh and I would recommend him highly. It was a fantastic birth that I will forever be grateful for after a bad experience with my second baby's delivery here in HK.

I had a very bad experience with Dr Ghosh. I would not recommend him to anyone. The long waits in his office, his nurses who are not as good as others I've seen and the 5 minutes he allots for appointments are not even the main reason. Please PM me if you want details.

I'm with the "Dr Ghosh is wonderful" crowd. I'll be going to him for Baby no 3 (had baby 2 with him). He was so supportive during that pregnancy (and no pressure for a C-section). And when we had a scare with a slow heartbeat, he was fantastic.
Had a worrying scan on a Saturday and Ghosh needed to consult with paediatric cardiologist and get opinion on Monday, but he told me to page him on Sunday if I was worried/had any questions. He was so sympathetic, and I have seen him be wonderfully kind with a lady who had a miscarriage. He whisked her out of his waiting room into a side room so she didn't have to sit with pregnant women.
He is really lovely and gives excellent patient care. Also has reputation as the top sonographer in town.
Yes, the nurses are a bit hassled and appts run late. But I'd still go to him!

Never been to him so can't comment on his manner but is Dr Ghosh really known as the top sonographer in town?? I had been told by a few of the well known obstetricians in town that Dr Lam at HK Diagnostics was the top man to see for scans.

Dr Ghosh is an excellent sonographer. He "found" my daughter's kidney, which none of the other drs were able to do. It is really hard to detect as it does not show up very clearly on the ultra sound and hers is a pelvic kidney so was not where it should have been. One dr got the diagnosis completely wrong and caused us lots of unnecessary stress. He teaches ultrasound at the university so whether he is the best is probably quite subjective, but he is very good.
