Dr Alexander Doo and Dr Patrick Chan

Hi, I'm trying to decide which of these two doctors to see - I have read great things about both of them but there seems to be a HUGE difference in their fees.

Dr Doo is charging $950 per visit plus $1000 for any ultrasounds and Dr Chan charges $850 per visit which includes ultrasounds.

Has anyone seen these doctors who can tell me a little bit about the machines they use etc? Or even general feedback about either of the doctors would be great please.

Hi - I saw Dr Patrick Chan throughout my pregnancy, in my opinion his equipment etc. was very good but I have nothing to compare it to (except the public hospital and it was superior to the machines they use there). You don't usually have a long wait in the surgery (which is the case with some other drs here). He is a nice guy. However, I delivered at the QMH so he wasn't actually there for the birth. I suspect that like many doctors here he may err more towards caution/convenience and therefore prefer C sections (as I went overdue C section was mentioned) - but you'd need to discuss that with him I think.
 
I currently see Dr. Patrick Chan and LOVE him. He's very patient and thorough. We never feel rushed through our appointments and his waiting time isn't bad. We love that he will carefully explain all our options giving us all the pros and cons so we can make a decision ourselves. He never makes us feel like he's pushing us in one direction or another. Also, he never makes us feel stupid for asking simple questions and will always carefully address all our concerns. He's also easily accessible - even at 2 am in the morning! I'm not sure the difference in the ultrasound machines (I use to see a different doctor in the same clinic as Dr. Doo) so can't really comment on that but I know it gets the job done. Good luck!
 
Thank you both so much already! I have found out that Dr Chan has the same ultrasound machine that Dr Doo has so that's something off my concern list. You know when you just wonder why a particular doctor is just so much cheaper than another?

Dr.Doo

I saw Dr. Doo, but only once as I was referred to him by my OB/GYN for a second opinion regarding some issues with my pregnancy. I have never seen Dr. Chan, so again, nothing to compare to but Dr. Doo was very professional and very thorough. He did external, internal ultrasounds and a few other tests before giving his opinion. He is not a "warm and fuzzy" kind of guy but that is not for me anyway. I just wanted expertise and professionalism and that is what I got. The ultaasound machine was great as they put the picture up on like a big movie screen, which didnt happen at my original OB/GYN.

Anyway, just to give you an opinion on the other side. Not sure why the costs are different.. Maybe Dr. Doo has an expertise or background that Dr. Chan doesn't? Anyway, hope that helps!
 
Dr. Doo was my wife's obgyn and we both found him very excellent, methodical and reassuring. HE explains everything in detail and is open to having you call him at odd hours if you have a question/concern.

We paged him once at about 11:30pm and he rang back in about 2 mins!

Our experience with him was excellent. Yes he is expensive, but how do you put a price on peace of mind?
 
Yeah its not really the expense that bothers me but rather the difference - its all covered by our medical so makes no difference. Dr Chan is highly qualified and has been highly recommended as well. I guess it could be just practice costs at the end of the day too. Its great to such reassuring experiences though, I appreciate it.
 
Dr Doo delivered my little girl last month.I had very difficult pregnancy and I must say he was top motch.I must have alled him in the middle of the night at least 4 times - he always called back with prompt advice or came to the hospital to see me.We had every scan recorded onto dvd and all the scans were 3d.I really liked his manner and sense of humor -even in very difficult times.My friend was with dr.Chan and was very happy with him so I suppose it all comes down to personal preference and how complicated your pregnancy is. Good luck and I'm sure you will be pleased with either of them.
 
I have very good experience with Dr Chan as well. My baby was delivered by him in January. There was some slight complication and we have to do a C-section 3 weeks early but he has been very reassuring and made you feel calm and confident.
 
I also had an exceptional experience with Dr Doo over the past 5 months, and he helped deliver my baby boy around 2 weeks ago at Matilda. This was my second pregnancy, but first with Dr Doo, and comparing him with my first Ob/gyn (who I thought was also very good) I thought he was extrememly professional, thorough, kind, knowledgeable and approachable. I had a fairly smooth pregnancy and didn't really have to call on him for any additional help, but he continually reassured me that if I needed anything to call him straight away. In the delivery room, he gave me a lot of confidence in his ability to get the job done, and my husband also felt very reassured by him. Honestly, I can't recommend him enough, and if we decide to have a third child, and are in Hong Kong, I will definitely go back to him without hesitation.
For the record, the longest I waited to see him for a consultation was an hour. He also does a full scan each consultation (much more detailed by other Obs I have seen, which has actually been a few), explains everything that is going on, and I learnt much more from him in this pregnancy than prior Obs. As he does scans every visit, each visit is $1900 (which we were not fully covered for), but when I was deciding which Ob to go with, I felt most confident with him. We thought the increased cost was a small price to pay for the level of service he provided, and the confidence he gave me to get through the whole process. I found that he is also very open to go with 'your' birth plan. He was quite 'pro' natural delivery, never pushed for a c-section, and listened to what I wanted. My husband and I were extremely happy with him. Good luck in your decision.
 
I actually started off seeing Dr Doo for my current pregnancy and have now changed to Dr Chan.

Apart from the difference in cost, I found Dr Doo to be extremely busy (I had to wait 45 mins to 1 hour for my consultation each time). Although he is very professional and seems to know what he is talking about, I guess I felt a bit rushed at each consultation. At the consultations, the nurse takes your blood pressure and you have to go to the laboratory next door to get your blood samples taken.

Also, I wanted to book the Sanatorium to give birth, but I felt that Dr Doo was trying to convince me to book Matilda. When I did end up deciding on the Sanatorium, Dr Doo mentioned that he has sessions at Matilda on certain days of the week which means that he can't be present if I end up having the baby naturally at another hospital during those sessions. So if you book Dr Doo and want to have a natural birth, then you are pretty much limited to having your baby at Matilda if you want him to be present for sure.

My friend recommended Dr Chan so I tried him and both my husband and I absolutely adore his manner. He does everything himself (taking blood pressure and blood samples) and you never feel rushed at his consultations. He is very happy and willing to give you a lengthy answer to any questions you may have. The wait is not long for your consultation, usually around 15-20 mins, and the consultation itself is much longer than Dr Doo's (maybe he books less consultations every hour, I don't know).

It's my first pregnancy so I guess I prefer Dr Chan's more personal touch, but it's a very personal thing so the best thing is to try both of them and then decide. Note that the hospital you booked might charge you a fee for changing doctors though, the Sanatorium charged me an "admin" fee of HK$1,000 for changing.

I have already made an appointment with a Dr. Patrick Chan with the above information. I just want to make sure that he is the same one as the one that you all have such positive feedback on.

The details you supplied for Dr. Patrick Chan are correct. His office is in Tak Shing House in Central.

I too am one of his patients and really like him. Like others have said, I find him very approachable and empathetic. I do find him very cautious and conservative but after my first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, I was keen to see a doctor that took my fears about being pregnant again seriously.

Hope you find him as wonderful as so many of us here already do!
 
Dr. Doo's Practice... don't believe all the hype you read on the forums.

Hi, I tried Dr. Doo August 2010 and it was a pretty awful experience. Maybe HK Doctors are really into money, but every time I went there, the wait was more than 1 hour long. Several women complained about this. When I told this to Dr. Doo, he just shrugged it off as part of the practice. I find it extremely callous to expect expectant mothers to wait that long in a small room like that. How disrespectual of other ppl's time. I even asked other patients in the room because I thought maybe I was unlucky, but no, every one had the same complaint. And then when I wanted to transfer to another Dr. they wanted to charge me 200HKD for copying a few pages of notes!

I think it is sad when Drs are so driven by money (I spent more than 8700 HKD during two routine visits) that all they care is profits.

What a sad situation. I changed to another Dr.

Just know that if you go there, you will have to wait a lot. If you have 8 prenatal visits, you are going to spend 8 hours in the waiting room.
