Downs result high risk

When I had mine done, the doc told me right away that the NT measurement was extremely high which could be an indication that I would have a high risk. He didn't elaborate, but he did tell me what it was... when the results came back, sure enough, all added together, I had a risk of 1 in 7. But we knew even from the ultrasound that we could possibly be looking at that kind of risk.

How long does it take roughly to get the blood test results?

I'm a little anxious about it because I have my scan and hospital appointment right before I fly home for a few days when I'd hoped I'd be able tell all my family and friends. I'd really love to have the all clear before I go...

If you do it through the public system they will call you within 2 weeks if you're high risk. They don't call you if you're low risk.

If you're going private it's probably faster.

Though remember, being low risk doesn't mean all clear any more than being high risk guarantees a problem.

My opinion (and ONLY my opinion)... better just to tell them. Most pregnancies progress normally - but for those which don't, things can go wrong at ANY time - 13 weeks isn't some magic number that means everything is safe... and also a false "negative" on those tests is not unheard of either. I don't say this to be negative, but if something DOES go wrong, from my experience, you'll appreciate the support of family and friends. If you are looking for an "all clear" it will never come, not even after the birth.

Ok so I'll only maybe have the info from the scan. I booked a private scan to make sure I've had one before I go away as my hospital rgestration is on the same day that I fly and they said they cant guaratee when i will have a scan. I'll wait for the hospital blood tests though, theres no point in stressing about the all the risks I know. Thanks for your help again!

You'll have the nt scan done privately but the blood test at the hospital? Is that possible? The results are combined, not treated seperately, to give your risk level, so I'm fairly sure you have to do both (scan and blood test) at the same place, ideally on the same day.

Its a huge coincidence but I've had a trip home booked for a few months that will now land in the 12th week of my pregnancy. Its unreal timing for me to tell both mine and my husbands parents and our friends. I'm registering at the hospital right before I go. I have no idea how the tests are done, I just wanted to make sure I've seen something before I leave for the UK and tell anyone. I think personally we wanted the peace of mind. The hospital can't guarantee that they will do the scan on the day I register, they said it could be 3 days later in which case I'll already be away.

Normally they would book your nt scan for 11 or 12 weeks, it has to be done before 14 weeks. You go in one room and they do the scan, then you get sent to another room and they take blood. Assuming your risk is above the cut off (I think it's 1:250) they don't call but you can find out your risk the next time you go in for a hospital appt.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the nt scan alone - particularly if it's mid-range, it doesnt really tell you anything, the blood test is more revealing.

Yeah I understand I won't find out the downs result before I go. At least by having a scan I can see something to make it all feel a little more real before I leave.

Just did my NT scan both in private and public. I went to Dr Ghosh. It was quite fast except for the first try when baby refused to move at all. The blood result came back the next day. I was so surprised it was so fast.
But I was even more surprised in Public (I went to Tsan Yuk), the sonographer did not bother to check the baby heart rate though it was my first ultrasound with them. They didn't tell me anything whether the NT measurement was normal or not. I recorded 1.05mm in my 11WK+5D.
Thanks to Dr Ghosh, I knew I saw 2 legs 2 arms which Tsan Yuk really didn't bother to inform me. :D

oh that's great news Justarlene about the quick positive results!

I feel reassured about booking a back up private scan too because my registration is at Tsan Yuk also.

Anyone got back their blood test result. I have received mine which say 1 in 99,999. Could the number be that high? I thought the range was few hundreds to thousands.

I have mine back now from athe private test as 1:10000 which I thought was very good haha 1:99999 is pretty full proof!

Nicole, Liquorice, Lesliefu,

I know this is old post but I couldn't find other post on DS scan that is as detailed as this one and really hope you can share with me your experience.

I just had my Nifty test done at Dr Lam's clinic (by his partner Dr Macor Wan) and the result came back good, thank God. I'm 36 and this is my first pregnancy and I'm know I'm being paranoid but I was thinking of getting the NT scan done at public hosp as we'll, just to be on the safe side.

However I was told by QMH that they wouldn't be able to fit me in within the NT timeframe since I booked late. Since I'll most likely miss out on the NT scan, my question is, if there is any abnormality and signs of DS, can it be picked up during the 20 week scan? I have my 20 week scan booked with Dr Lam in 8 weeks time.

I'm just not sure whether the scan for DS only happens once ie after Nifty/NT, once you're in the clear, the obs will not be paying anymore attention to this subject and move on to concentrate on other parts of the baby's body.

Any advice will be much appreciated, tq

I was also a patient of Dr Wan and we decided to only have the OSCAR/nuchal skin fold test which was actually performed by Dr Lam. Personally, if you had the NIFTY test you should feel confident of the results which boast a high level of accuracy. If you go public, they wont perform NIFTY test which is an elective procedure. If you are worried about your results, speak to Dr Lam and he can arrange more tests.

Thanks so much for your post Pandy! I was worried that everyone is no longer subscribed to this thread since it's so old. Can I ask, was Nifty test already been introduced back during your time then, otherwise why did u choose to do the Oscar test instead knowing that Nifty has a higher accuracy level? I'm just trying to find out if there are things that Oscar test covers that aren't in Nifty.

Since I might most likely miss the window at QMH, should I go get an Oscar test at a private clinic if Oscar is really a more comprehensive test?

I was told by Dr that NIFTY is more accurate than Oscar. If you had NIFTY, you dont need Oscar. You can check with your Dr for reassurance The NIFTY test was available, but we didnt choose it: (1) cost; (2) my age was not above the risk group of 35+. Stop worrying so much!!

Thanks Pandy, that's reassuring to know. Did you continue to see Dr Wan/Lam for the rest of your pregnancy? Would you rate them?
