Domestic Helper Needed for Special Needs Baby

Hi All,

I am in dire need of finding a domestic helper for 4 month old baby with Downs Syndrome. The helper will not be the main carer or teacher of the baby, but at times will have to step in and must understand that Downs Syndrome Children need special technics to improve their development. Must have excellent, clear spoken English and not one that is just a mumble with a Filipino accent. Its not just about making a baby smile, its about teaching them the correct vocab.

Currently employ a DH who we thought had good English. Well that is a disaster, she might be able to write and read English, but her pronounciation is shocking. She also mentioned on her CV that she had knowledge of handling newborns/babies/toddlers, but when my child recently developed a cold, she panicked and was found to be totally out of her depth. I have had to question the authenticity of her CV.

If anyone knows of any trustworthy DH's or agencies that would be able in assisting to help re-employ another DH with special needs experience, then please email me on.: [email protected]

Thanks
DB

Hiya,

Whilst I don't have anyone in mind to recommend, maybe you can speak to the agent whom helped us to find our excellent helper.

We looked at a few "big name" agencies thinking they would have better qualified staff but didn't like anyone they recommended. So we just walked into this tiny dishevelled looking agency (heavily pregnant) and immediately I was shown the profiles of 8-10 qualified mid-wives and nurses. The one we eventually chose was an ex-midwife, and was always the calm one in the house during the panicky first few months. It's also very obvious that she loves babies and children in general which makes a massive difference to how patient she is when she plays and interacts with my baby. Although finding someone with a non-accent may be a challenge though.

DB,

I know someone who will be available in the summer. Hope you find someone before that. If not, I can get her number for you.

Best of luck!

Hi Rani,

Can you tell me when exactly and how experienced are they etc, etc. Do they have Special Needs experience???

dbonks uk,

Can't trust the cv, not even the diplomas... they sell that cheap in streets of manila. You'd need to interview the prospect yourself otherwise might end up having to go through the painful process again. There are DH here who are about to finish their contracts or have lived in HK for 7 yrs thus free to seek employment. If you don't mind the trouble, you can visit one of the churches Filipinos go to, and ask the pastor there to refer someone to you.

it doesn't matter if a domestic helper lives in hk for 20 years, if they have been here on a domestic helper visa, they will NEVER be eligible for perm res status or be able to take up "any" employment.

sorry db, not much help for you, just wanted to clarify.

Have you contacted the Child Development Centre at the Matilda? http://www.cdchk.org/
FDHs are not usually employed for their teaching skills - see if the CDC can provide that or consider hiring a 'proper' nanny (no idea on this-sorry).
