My daughter has a high fever, I am really reluntant to take her to the dr, for many reason , especially the fact I don't want her to be waiting in a room full of other sick people. In uk there are GP we can call out but there does seem to be any equivalent service here. I called my usual Doctor in Quality and was told by the nurse to bring her down to the clinic, despite me telliing her thats exactly what I did not want to do, help!

there are very few that do home visits....if they do it's VERY VERY VERY expensive.

even though you are reluctant, the best thing to do is to take her in... remember a fever can be a good thing. it means that your little one is trying to fight off whatever it is that is making her sick.

good luck!

I have no experience in this yet but all I know is that on my health insurance, home visits are listed and the cost is around double. There must be some private doctors that don`t have a crowded waiting room though, no?

We were in DB and both our clinics had after hours care. As carang said, they were very $$$$.

That said, I didn't hesitate the first time DD got croup (and I off course didn't know what it was! 45 minutes later we were in the clinic and DD was on an inhaler thingy with steroids) - I happily paid the $3000 (I think it was about that including medication) to have her breathing again and not have to wait in a hospital waiting room and deal with all the travel! Plus I had a newborn at home and the thought of waking up everyone and going to the hospital was not an easy task! As DH hadn't arrived home from work until just after it happened I had no choice.

Hipy> I'm also looking for a home visit doctor (preferably oversea qualified) as the local ones tend to overdo it with all those pills. Pls tell us any info you might have as I'm really interested.

I guess I'm just abit paranoid about germs these days- took my 5 year old to the doctor bcos of an upset tummy and sat next to a man who was couging (he had a mask on), and on the otherside was a little girl with a runny nose who refused to wear a mask- 2 days later my 5 year old came down with a bad case of flu. Whole family got it- absolutely shattering, so will try to do anything to minimise infection.

I have been seeing Dr Lily Wong in Central and she does home visits. I have not tried out that service but I like her as a doctor, good communicator and assertive. She managed to convince my husband into having an important blood test! A first.

Hi alicemathur,
do you know where Dr Lily Wong is qualified from? Call me paranoid, but I've had alot of bad experiences with the local docs here.
thanks

Yes Cici she is from London, and has 2 young children of her own. When we went to see her last time for my husband's appt we started chatting about our children after a while .She is very friendly and easy going and having children of her own, really someone I can relate to. My friend met her at a talk she gave at the Aberdeen Marina club recently on childhood illness where she gave lots of practical advice.

Dr Lily is also my doctor.A very approachable person with a very english accent!I always joke with her that I think she is more english than me as she has only been in Hk for a while. She was the one who set up the new doctors home visiting service after arriving from uk ,doctorsdirect, they do home visits all around HK now which they have just started advertising in my practice where she works parttime only . Just now I gave my friend who has 5 kids(unusal for HK, I know!) this info, as 2 of her children had fever and sore throat and tummy aches, she called her own drs and was told to 'bring them down', easier said than done sometimes!. She just called to thank me for giving her the info and to say how useful it was to have this service and was going to get her husband to use it as he is always making excuses that he cannot take time off to see his dr , as they go and treat patients in offices as well. It just so happened it was Dr Lily who visited them as well, cause I know there are a few expat doctors doing the visits now. She was given medication and had a throat swab as well done. I don't think it was cheap but my friend said she would have paid anything for someone to come to her,but because they give out a reciept , she could claim back on her insurance anyway.
I dont have the number at hand but on the brochure they did mention a website and my friend said she just googled doctorsdirect hk and was able to find contact details. I definatly think this is a better choice than a trip down emergency room!!

hi there,

just wanted everyone to know about this uk qualified home visit doctor who came to my house last month when i suddenly had a sore throat. as i am pregnant, i didnt want to go to a clinic where i might catch something from other patients.

Got to know a Dr. Lily Wong of Doctorsdirect thru a friend. She came immediately to my house and took my blood test then gave me the proper medication which cleared up in days. I think this is the kind of medical home service we lack in hk for people who might be afraid of catching something in a clinic or for those (like me) heavily pregnant or who are just too sick to leave their bed. Dr Wong told me she grew up and worked many years as a GP in the UK and is also a qualified pharmicist who speaks native english and cantonese. As she has a mobile clinic she can reach most places within an hour and can be contacted at 25238044 or via her mobile No. 60239153 or 60239172 or visit her website at www.DoctorsDirect.com.hk:lilangel:

She grew up and qualified as a pharmicist then a doctor in the UK. She can speak native english and is also fluent in cantonese.

Hi SB2

I just came across this and I happened to use Dr Lily's service recently, introduced by my friend. She charges very reasonable rates and the service was great. Have a look on the website doctorsdirect.com.hk there is a PDF file with prices listed.

Ok, as promised reporting back to everyone about our home visit with Dr Lily . All I can say was that it was definately money well spent (although, we didn't actually pay bcos our insurance covers doctors visits).
Didn't want to take my 4 yr old to the hospital after the fiasco with my husband at Adventist Hospital. We had to wait for over an hour for the doctor (waiting area was full of sick people), ok- so it was 8pm at night, but felt really uncomformatable there- when we actually saw the doctor- it was a pretty fast visit, did the swine flu test- negatitive, gave us some painkillers and off we went- although the insurance covered everything we thought it was a right rip off $$$$ and time wise.ok, so got that off my chest.
Two weeks later it was sons turn to have a fever, so called Dr Lily. Took her 45 mins to come to our hse from kowloon side and she spent an hour with me and my son, checking his history, doing the swine flu test and also looking at the meds we have at home so no need to buy any more, even helped me give the meds to my son as he usually kicks and screams (ok, so I'm a softie, my husband usually does that part, but he was away on a biz trip).
She's definately worth $$ and much cheaper than what we had to pay at the adventist- even called me the next day to check how my son was doing.
Thanks Rani for the info!
