Do you have your ped's mobile?

I'm very happy with our son's doctor but her clinic doesn't have an out of hours number to call. I can't decide whether to change to a doctor than gives their mobile, or stick with the one we're happy with.

Alternatively we could ask her if she would give us her mobile number but I don't know how normal that is. Do most pediatricians give their number to patients?

Is it useful to have their private number? Do you ever actually use it?
 
I always though I had my ped's mobile number which I have never called until last Saturday night. my son had a situation at about 10pm, my husband and I were so worried so I decided to call our ped and ask her for opinion, that's when I found out that I actually don't have her mobile.
so I sent her an e-mail, expect her to give me some opinion whether I should bring my son to see her on Monday (today) or not, but she didn't reply.
I finally found her mobile number on their clinic's website, but I'm less worried about my son's situation now, so I didn't call her.
I think it's good to have one for the emergency situation when the parents are panic or don't know what to do when the clinic doesn't have an out of hours number to call. or if the ped can reply email on time would be really appreciated.
 
Some doctors will give out a beeper/ pager number, but will screen their calls through an answering service. I don't know any ped who will give out his or her personal mobile for all patients to call them day or night.

If you're going the private route, one option is to choose a ped linked to a major clinic or hospital. Ours is affiliated with Baptist Hospital in Kowloon, though he practices privately in his own office, too. If anything goes wrong after hours, we can call Baptist, or bring our child to the outpatient clinic there. If they feel there is a need -- this has happened twice -- they can then page our ped. Often times, he's on site even after regular hours.

Also don't forget HK's public system. If there is a nighttime emergency -- extreme high fever, seizure, trauma -- don't wait till morning. You have a network of 24-hour government hospitals that are free or nearly free.

I know of one clinic in central who do provide doctor's mobile numbers on their website - but whether anyone actually answers them I don't know....

I think I'll ask our doctor what we should do if we have a problem when her office is closed and if her only advice is go to A&E I might look for another.

Gracey - is it easy to find a doctor that is linked to a hospital? Would I need to contact the hospital and ask for a list?
 
Our pediatrician - Dr. Barbara Lam - has an after hours mobile number to call. I have called it several times. If we can't find her on it, we can always as the Sanatorium Hospital to page her for us.
 
Aquarian - Most private hospitals have websites with lists of their resident and visiting specialists, like peds.
 
I know this is an old thread but as I am a new mom, I started to go through many useful posts here. Future HK Mom, I go to Dr Barbara Lam as well and notice that she has her mobile number on the business card, never called it but good to know it is there. Which number can I call the Sanatorium to find her if it is an after hour emergency? or can I just take the baby to the Sanatorium directly to see the A&E doctor on duty? Thanks.
 
EYM I too am a new HK mum with an infant and would like to be prepared just in case... I always thought I would just call the local emergency if out of hours or something serious happened and I was away from an area I know-has anyone relied on public service here? I have lived abroad for a while and would never depend on an ambulance in the countries I've been so just wondering if it is reliable here?
Any experiences or advice shared is greatly appreciated!
