Hello,

I live in DB and am expecting my first - have not decided on a hospital yet but I am thinking of trying a local one to keep costs down...does anyone know how you woudl get form DB to a public hospital to give birth? I have no idea and this bit is freaking me out!!

All advice most welcome

Thank you

Hi.....I live in db gave birth in private hospital on hk island but it's the same journey if you go to a public hospital.

There are a number of ways,

a). Ferry to central then cab to Queen Mary. This is if you think you have lots of time, waters just broken or contractions just started etc.
b). If it is an emergency then you can call 999, and the ambulance will take you to the closest public hospital which i believe is Princess Margaret in Lai King.
c). If it is a real emergency they will send a helicopter to come and get you (the helipad in db is by the marina club).

Don't worry, most people have lots of time to get to hospital.

hundreds if not thousands of women make this trip every year. if it is your first you will have plenty of time. it's not like you feel your first contraction and the baby is popping out within the hour...at least not very often!

the public hospital of choice is QMH. if you ARE in a rush, then get the ferry and call an ambulance when you are on the ferry. it will pick you up at the pier and then take you to QMH. if you are not in such a hurry, then you can get a taxi. from the pier.

good luck!

Thank you - do you know roughly how much it is to go private?
Public seems ok and some people seem to have a good experience but I just want to know all the options...

Hi- just to give you a rough idea of private costs.

My son was born by emergency c-section, I was in hospital for 5 days and it cost HK$106,000.
It costs less if you have normal delivery. And that was at the Matilda which was one of most expensive hospitals. But it was for semi private not private room.

Whereas 5 nights at a public hospital will cost you $550......:yeah2:

If you go public - be prepared for good medical services, and almost no personal service at all.

But then you get your baby home, and it's wonderful!
