Hi...
I've heard recently that many pregnant women are taking DHA supplements. Does anyone know where to get them and which brand suitable for pregnancy???

:thanks

I am taking Alaska fish oil and got them in watsons. There are some special pregnancy brands that you can order online as well.

GNC also sells it in tablet form. Look for DHA and EPA and pay attention to the dosage, although any amount is better than nothing.

Hi wasabibunny....
can you tell me which brand are you using? I read from the internet that cod liver oil is not good for pregnant woman, so i want to make sure that I buy the correct one.

How much are they?

:thanks

We bought it in the GNC in Queensway Plaza (those malls above the Admiralty MTR,but not Pacific Place). Don't see why not, though. And I believe the GNC brand has been certified as reliable by an independent test lab back in the US. A lot of these supplements aren't what they claim (in the US they are not regulated by FDA, so nobody checks on their actual contents).

I am pretty sure I bought mine at Watsons. It's KON WELLTA Alaska premium deep sea salmon fish oil and it's in capsule form.

i bought GNC's Fish Body Oils 1000, which contains
EPA 180mg
DHA 120mg
I've read some article said that, we should take 300mg (DHA) per day. (Cod liver oil are not recommended)
Well, i just take 1 capsule per day, and i feel like eating some fish. (I hate fish, so i think i really need it.)

The problem with all these non-medications (from an American medical mpoint of view) is that there haven't been many scientific studies done on them and they are not examined by the FDA. So dosage is also rather problematical.

I asked my OB about fish oil supplements during pregnancy as I don't eat any fish myself. She prescribes a brand called mumomega, which is specifically for pregnant women. I've also seen it for sale at 360 in Elements. I was told to stop taking it at 34 weeks.

Some doctors/OBs will be pro-supplement and others won't be. Any idea why it would be good for 33 weeks, but not in the end? Our doctor still has our 17 month old on it. (And we adults also take it.)

The reason to stop taking fish oils at around 34 weeks is that the omega-3 fats can actually have a small blood thinning effect. Therefore, there is a very very small increased risk of extra bleeding during delivery. My OB says I can take the fish oils again after delivery and during breastfeeding. Similarly, if pregnant women are prescribed a low dose of aspirin (which also thins the blood) then OBs usually advise to stop taking it at around 34 weeks.
