Developmental Delays

Dear All

I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a paediatrican who specialises in dealing with developmental delays. I have an 18m toddler and am very concerned about her progress. I know that children develop at their own pace regarding speaking and motor skills but I can't help but be concerned that there is something more unlining to her slow progress

I think that my kids' pediatrician is very good with making sure my kids' development are appropriate. She is also very patient, attentive and never rushes us through our appointments. Her nam is Dr. Barbara Lam and her phone number is 2156-3888.
 
or you could go to th nearest MCHC. They have thorough developmental / milestone checks. In case they raise alarm - and I hope they dont - go to a doctor. In case it is just normal parent concerns MCHC mightbe able to reassure you. All the best
 
Thanks for the replies and will look further into Barbara Lam. Noted that she used to head up the premature baby units in QM before opening her own practice.

Miran, Yes we are already registered with our local MCHC and they are monitoring her progress but just wanted to see whatelse I could do privately since these first years of life are so cruicial to her development so don't want to be just waiting around and miss opportunities. Has anyone been thru the Child Assesment centres in HK and can give me some guidance?
 
My daughter has physical developmental delays and we have been doing everything through the public system and I am quite happy with them. She has physiotherapy and occupational therapy to help her with both gross motor and fine motor skills. The only problem is that there can be a bit of a wait to get in... I have heard good things of this therapy centre: http://www.physiohk.com/spot/ - but as it's private, you will be paying for it, if your insurance doesn't cover it!! But they are meant to be quite good, especially with special needs kids... I haven't tried them for myself though as I'd rather just pay $60 at the public hospital, which is quite adequate for our needs.
 
My son has development delays but this is attributable to a congenital heart condition. He currently undergoes both speech and occupational therapy privately and the charges are usually around $700-$1000 per hour.

We went to the Matilda for a Child Development Assessment when he was 4 years old. The assessment was conducted by both a speech and occupational therapist and covered fine motor, gross motor, pre-writing, social/emotional, self-help, cognitive and language.

I believe they also offer a Baby Development Assessment for babies up to 18mths old so it would probably be a simplified version.

The report gives an age equivalent based on your child's performance, so it can be subjective depending on child's cooperation and mood on that day. Once you've had time to digest the report, you will have a review session with the therapists and they can give you ideas and goals on how best to help your child if it is deemed necessary.

Having said that, the local MCHCs are usually quite thorough so if they are not overly concerned and there are no obvious delays (eg. not walking by 18mths etc) then it might be just that your little one is a late bloomer. I would imagine it being quite difficult to assess an 18mth old anyway, so it might be worth waiting until your child is a little older. Maybe speak to a doctor first because the development assessments are also quite expensive.
 
Hi..seems that ppls experience at their MCHC are quite thorough for developmental delays and as we'll be seeing them around the beg of Sept then will see what they have to say about my LO progress..

Yes assessments aren't cheap but I suppose thats a one off but the ongoing therapy whether its PT/OT or ST will be more of a ongoing burden but a sml price to pay if they help...

It's been a while since my last post and my LO is now 2yrs old. She has developed physically and her speech is also progressing but I still think that she's behind here age equivalent peers. We had our assesmnt at the Child assessment centre and they confirmed delays so she now goes to physio every 2 wks nd wait listed for speech therapy but the scary thing the Dr noticed and said was she had her own agenda. It scares me think if this indicates towards Autism. Any suggestions on which centers are qualified to assess on this
 
Try dr anna Ng we used her for our daughter who has a developmental delay and wanted to see exactly how serious it was, as doctors for the government insisted she attend special school, but we had doubts (as I am a teacher myself and I had seen more serious cases and still be able to attend regular school). Anyhow, she will do home visits which ate useful when doing the assessment as the child is in a familiar environment...(my daughter ever cooperated and did her own things when assessed at Matilda and the government clinic) so it came back that she didn't understand anything, whilst I knew she did...anyhow, I believe it makes a difference.
