Desperately Shopping Sai Kung

Hi, our move to Sai Kung, HK is just around the corner and I can't seem to be able to locate a Sai Kung shopping directory or everyday life sort of guidebook. If there's anyone out there who lives in this part of the N.T., please help!

I'm wondering where is the best place to really load up on household goodies - groceries, fresh meats/seafood, washer, dryer, beds, curtains, blinds..the like.

Is there a one stop shop superstore like Carrefour or Walmart etc.etc?

Where is the wet market in Sai Kung?

If there's nothing in Sai Kung, what's my next best option?

Thanks for any advice/contacts I can get!

Anita

Sai Kung Info

Hi Rani,

FYI, I found a website that may be helpful for future inquiries into Sai Kung. The SK District Council has a website with a simple intro if the area at:

http://www.travelinsaikung.org.hk/english/intro/index.html or just go to www.travelinsaikung.org.hk and select English.

Scroll down the page, look left and they have a link to a quarterly English language guide (Saikung District Link) they publish for residential EXPATS. It's got quite a good deal of the info I was looking for on healthcare, shopping, stores, kids activities, restaurants, maps etc. in the area.

Hi Anita,
Try IKEA. The nearest one in KLN-Bay
Sai Kung downtown has some Chiese antique furniture shops, they even tailor made (copy from the old one) one for you to suit your space
Groceries shopping either through internet, or go to "Wellcome Supermarket" in Sai Kung downtown, has wet market inside the store. Besides, there is also a wet market in Sai Kung downtown just a few blocks away from the supermarket.
More... during the weekends, there are many fishboat parked along the seashore selling fresh sea food. Very good bargain.

Good luck

Many people from Saikung also go to the supermarket at TASTE in Festival Walk at Kowloon Tong.
It's more upscale than Wellcome. Although I go to both.

Saikung also has some great organic shops and there's an amazing organic butcher/fishmonger in Ma Hang right next door to Sai Kung.

There really aren't any one stop superstores in Hong Kong so if you are used to that kind of shopping, be prepared for a change.

Jusco of Tseung Kwan O (Hang Hau MTR) is just like the Walmart as it has everything from baby stuff to electircal appliances, meat and vegetables, food court...etc. It is of a reasonable size but not as big as those giant superstore in US though.

Apart from teh Wellcome supermarket in Sai Kung, many people live in Sai Kung do go to Tseung Kwan O for shopping, cycling and outing as this area is also quite developed and convenient. It takes 20 mins from Sai Kung to TKO. Good to explore new things after you settle down.

Taste of Kowloon Tong is a bit far and is more upsacle. But be careful buying some frosen sea food there as I accidentially bought the "oil fish" from Taste last time while they told us it is scold fish. They refushed to refund and admit cheating of customers b y putting wrong lable too. After it was widely reported in teh news about other supermarket sell "oil fihs", Taste just removed the lables but still continue to sell. So no matter how big is the supermarket or how "upscale" it is, be careful when you choose your food. Kowloon Tong is a bit far compared with TKO too.
