Deposit HKD 39000?

Dear fellow mothers,
Am now 14 weeks pregnant and we would be relocating to HK in April this year. I learnt that as a foreigner, we would need to pay HKD 39000 as a deposit in order to make a booking at any hospital. I also learnt from an OBS in HK that this deposit can be refunded after we receive our HK ID. Has anyone encounter this?
Am so lost about which doctor to go to without burning a hole in our pocket especially since insurance company might not cover the cost.

Regarding the deposit, yes, the amount to pay to book a room is higher when you don't have the HK ID. They might just reimburse you the difference when you get the ID, or you can decide to leave the deposit as it's part of the final fees. This amount helps to book in a private hospital (not sure you need to pay a deposit at public. Anybody knows ?). For example to book at the Adventist, the deposit is 20 000 HK$ for HK ID holders.
Any "private" obs/specialist will cost a lot anyway, consultation fees can be between 600 to 1000 per visit (not including the scan or any medication !).
Maybe it would be good to check with your insurance first, but if you go to public, you'll get a good service anyway, and much cheaper.
 
yes, that is the normal practice. it is to discourage mainland women from coming over the border and taking advantage of the medical services here. many of these women have little if any pre-natal care and as such, they generally cost more to care for.

the day you land in hk, you can go directly to HK immigration with your paperwork and tehy will issue you a temporary HKID. this will be sufficient to book a room.

if you plan on using the public system, the charges are minimal.
 
Matilda is Hkd 20k deposit as well. I don't know if it is higher if you don't have a HKID. But wouldn't you be getting one within a week of your arrival as your husband's visa gets processed?
