Delivery at QMH

North Point should go to Pamela Youde - and personally, I think that for non-complicated pregnancies (which are probably 95%+ of pregnancies), PY is "better" than QMH. The doctors/nurses are just as good, it is closer and easier to get to (minibus from North Point), you have the option of a "special accommodation ward" which doesn't exist at QMH... why would you want to go to QMH instead??

I have a LOT of experience at BOTH hospitals for various things - but delivered only at QMH. The first time, I hadn't heard of PY so I used my father-in-law's address instead of my own. The second, I had and was really looking forward to it, but my pregnancy became high risk and I was transferred to QMH. I was so disappointed! I know many people who have had babies at both hospitals and in general, the people at PY were happier overall... (very unscientific, I know - but just from my observations...)
 
Thanks for the reply. Reason that we want QMH is because my wife had a stillbirth at 26 weeks few years ago back in the US due to per-eclampsia. So, we figure out that very likely that we will have a per-mature labor this time as well. Heard that QMH has the best facilities for nicu, that's why we would want to go there.

Also, do you what are some good doctors for high-risk pregnancy in HK?

If that were the case, I would probably go to QMH too - so sorry for your loss. My 2nd daughter spent 4 months in the NICU in QMH and honestly it was pretty rough. They have strict visiting hours and conditions... I've since said that if we have a 3rd child with the same genetic condition as my 2nd (25% chance), I'd prefer to move back to Australia and NICU there would be medically as good, but emotionally a million times better... I don't tell you this to scare you - but just to inform you. Visiting is strictly from 3-8pm, only two people are allowed in at once. For the first month, ONLY the parents are allowed in but after then, grandparents are allowed in only on weekends. Outside of grandparents and parents, no one else is allowed in at all. I found it extremely isolating and difficult, particularly as we had to balance life with a 21 month old at home, who met her sister only once in those first four months (they do bend the rules slightly at times with just cause).

All that said, yes the risk of preterm labour is higher, it is not necessarily very likely. Many women who have preeclampsia have it in only one pregnancy and not in future pregnancies. I have a good friend who had a 27 week preemie due to preeclampsia and was very scared of it happening again but her 2nd child was born full term and healthy.

In my high risk pregnancy, I mostly saw the doctors at QMH - but I did also see Dr Cora Ngai. Her specialty is more in prenatal diagnostics but she has very good ultrasound equipment and would probably be good in your case as well. The other doctor I would recommend is Dr Lam: http://web.me.com/ccda/hkpdcnet/hkpdc.html - he also specialises in prenatal diagnostics.

with a history of pre-eclampsia myself, i was seen by high-risk dept at QMH. while the births of my kids came without all of the trappings and trimmings of a private delivery, medically, i was quite happy with QMH.

cora ngai delivered my first @ QMH before she left the public system. i don't have many nice things to say about her at all... my experience of her was vastly different to Nicolejoy's. i can only hope she has improved since going private.

i wish you and your wife a happy and uneventful remainder of the pregnancy.
 
Carang - I know we've had this conversation before about Cora Ngai - and I also have had friends who didn't find her as good as I did, but she was excellent in my situation.

Maybe to be "safer" better to go to Dr Lam first - although the cons to him is that his practice is very busy (lots of mainlanders apparently) so you wait much longer for an appointment. Pros are that he gives you a DVD of the ultrasound included in the price of the consult.

I liked different things about both of them and personally recommend them both for high-risk pregnancies. For low-risk pregnancies, I love Dr Patrick Chan, but he is not as "qualified" for high-risk. His ultrasound equipment is not as high quality... but he is lovely...
 
Hi nicejoy & carang, thanks very much for your advices and suggestions. As far as registering with QMH goes, do you know if I can just send some bank statements to someone who lives in the catchment area and use those bank statements as address proof? They claimed that they want utility bills as address proof, and I wonder if anyone who successfully registered in QMH with bank statement.

When I registered at QMH, I sent myself a hand addressed envelope with nothing inside and just took that envelope. I did have some old bank statements that went to the same address, but the hand addressed envelope was fine. That was in 2008...
 
You can also go to a private OB and have them write you a referrral letter explaining the details of the last pregnancy and the reason for your wishes to be at QMH (neo natal unit etc).
I had this done due to complications in my first pregnancy. I was living in new territories and my catchment hospital was tuen mun but my referral letter for PWH was fine and I registered there without any proof of address.

I've heard that QMH is the most in demand public hospital and the hardest to get into. I know people who have gone to other out of catchment area hospitals at other hospitals, but rarely at QMH unless for specific medical need. I don't know if one instance of preeclampsia would be enough to go to QMH over Pamela Youde. As far as I know, PY still has a NICU which can cater for premature babies - and they would only send the more complicated cases onto QMH. You can try getting a referral letter, but I'm not 100% sure if QMH would accept that as they are really strict on that issue...
 
bank statement is fine for registration at QMH (via Tsan Yuk Hospital) and can be in the name if husband or wife. That's what we've used and no issues...

My husband i are expecting our first baby in Nov. We have decided to go to QMH as it's the best hospital in HK in case there is any issues with the labour. However, i am a bit concerned on not able to see one doctor throughout the pregency, does anyone know any good doctor in QMH i can see throughout the whole period?
