I just got email I got declaim from Matilda. My doctor who delivers at Matilda made booking when I was 7 weeks pregnant. I was deffered on 30th of May and put on waiting list. Now at 15w I have been declined. What shell I do now? Should I register in public hospital? How do I find out which public hospital I can go to? If I register in public but then (for some reason) I get confirmed at Matilda can I not deliver in public? Any help will be greatly approciated!

It's still early. What does your doctor say? You still might get your spot. These days, private hospitals are taking more mainlanders because they pay more. It's terrible, but unfortunately a part of birthing in HK now. If you want, you could always register at a public hospital. If you live in HK island there are only 2. Queen Mary and Pamela Youde. Depending where you live, then that determines which hospital you can deliver at. I delivered both of my babies at Queen Mary and the midwives were great. You just don't get to choose your doctor...it's whoever is on duty. You do get assigned a midwife though once you're ready to deliver. You will need to do some checks at one of their antenatal clinics though so they have a record of your pregnancy. Those are free if you have Hong Kong id.

Thank you for the reply. The doc keep saying not to worry and that I should get spot but I don't want to end up 36weeks and with no hospital bed. I live in Happy Valley and m trying to find out which hospital I would belong to.

I was in the same situation. Got declined but my doc told me not to worry. I finally got confirmation at 37 weeks. Don't worry too much, if your doc says you'll get in you almost certainly will.
I registered with the public hospital too just for peace of mind but I don't think it's really necessary.

I was declined from Matilda at 15w and my ob told me not to worry. I got confirmation at 36w and delivered there. I did not make any backup plans, but planned to deliver at either Queen Mary's or Pamela Youde should Matilda not have worked out. I was told that I don't need to register at public hospitals very far in advance if I don't plan to use their antenatal services during pregnancy. My pregnancy was uncomplicated so I wasn't worried. If you want to book at other private hospitals that your doctor doesn't deliver at, you would have to change doctors. It is still early in pregnancy, perhaps you can discuss your concerns with your ob?

Thanks. I spoke to my doc office and that is what they told me. They said that it never happend that they patient was not accepted to the Matilda. When I presure her she said worst case scenario, doc gives you refferal to QMH and you do not need booking.

Yes, she only delivers at Matild. I would need to change doc to try other private hospital and i don't want to do that as i like my doc. I really want to deliver in Matilda. I am due begining of Jan so do not understan how it could get booked out. I would understand if i would be towards the end of the month!

I might asked her. I read somevhere that she use to deliver there but not anymore. I might drop the mw that looks after booking an email.

from what i understand, each matilda resident dr. gets a certain amount of spots for their patients so they have an idea where you are on "their" list.

the first ob/gyn i saw was a matilda resident, but he wasn't confident that i would get into matilda (think he had a long priority patient list ahead of me) and suggested i book another private hospital which didn't have a great reputation. at 8 weeks, when we submitted the papers to matilda, i was told i was #14 on a waiting list that matilda rep said was over 40 people long.

about a month later, i switched to my current dr., also a matilda resident, and they switched my booking with the hospital. i got a rejection notice at that time, but my dr. just said to be patient and it would be fine. i got in 1 month after that and was super relieved! i think my 2nd dr.'s waiting list was much shorter than the 1st dr.'s.

i'm due at the end of dec and they say private hospital delivery capacity is maxed out at that time due to mainland mothers shifting from public deliveries to private. read in a paper they are supposed to be limiting the number of mainland mother deliveries starting next year, but maybe that's just for the public hospitals...

good luck and hope all works out for you!

Thanks, my doctor said not too worry and that I should get accepted. I want to call Matilda and find out what number I am on a waiting list! But whenever I call person responsible for booking is not avaliable.

Hi Zoska

Similar to your situation, I started a similar thread although it was for delivery at end of Dec also at Matilda. Agreed with HKExpat2010, I also switched doctor and was able to get into the hospital I wanted. Initially I was almost close to plumbing for either Canossa or St Pauls which were not my choices.

An important factor is also whether you have good rapport with your doctor, if you trust her then stick with the doctor. From the numerous replies I also received, I was also told that Matilda will usually reject but then you will eventually get in. However completely appreciate the anxiety especially if this is your first baby.

Just keep trying with the Matilda Maternity Team since they do take time.

Good Luck . Will PM you the name of the person to ask for at Matilda.

Unbelievable!

Hi ladies...i am new to this forum but thought i'd give you an update on the dire straits of getting a maternity bed in Hong Kong. I registered with my OB at 4 weeks 6 days pg (2 days ago), and am most likely going to be waitlisted at Matilda as i am behind about 6 other of the Doc's patients in that intake group. INSANE!!!! Who can handle this stress???? Esp when pregnant!!!

It is insane, I know. But be assured. I'm in week 37, and I'm pregnant with my No 2, so the baby is likely to come earlier than my EDD. I only got my Matilda booking finally confirmed two days ago! Best luck!

Yep, I was going to say, don't stress about it yet. You haven't even been waitlisted or declined yet - just warned that you might be and the majority of people who don't get confirmed bookings (as opposed to being declined) do seem to get in nearer their due date.

I m 27 weeks now and still waiting! Not stressing about it anymore if will not get confirm my doc will give me referal letter to QMH. I m not gonna worry about things I do not have control over! Also I went from nr 9 to nr 3 on a waiting list within like 6-7 weeks! Try not to worry, I m sure your doc will do the best to get you. Who are you seeing?
