hi

i'm wondering how often a baby should be asleep during the day? 1 of my friend's baby girl is 7 weeks old and is awake from mid morning until mid afternoon, and another friend's sleeps right after feeds. my 5wk baby feeds and then sometimes plays for about 20min on her playmat and then yawns so i put her to her cot. should i be doing more to keep my baby awake to play during the day or is it okay to allow her to sleep when she is tired?

when generally will babies stay awake for most hours of the day?

Hi

I can't believe it's only 18 months ago that I had a 5 week old baby and have forgotten so much about all this already. One thing I do remember though was that at 5 weeks all my baby did pretty much was eat and sleep! I think if you get yourself a book on baby stuff, there should be some good advice for you to try regarding sleep. I went with the feed-play-sleep-wake cycle which worked for me.
Others may have other suggestions..

At that age I don't think my son even played much. All he seemed to do was eat and sleep. A few kicks and he was yawning away ! He was a good sleeper then - the good old days ! :)

Every baby is different and needs different amounts of sleep. It's not uncommon for babies of that age to sleep most of the day.

At that age, just let her sleep as much as she wants. You shouldn't be trying to force her to stay awake if she wants to sleep.

From what I've read, sleep is very important for a babies development.

And if your baby is sleeping a lot, treasure this time and use it to get some rest yourself :)

ahh okay thanks everyone... does anyone know if i follow a schedule for feeding times (trying to anyways) ie the gina ford "contented little baby" book... if i wake her for feeds, as opposed to her waking for demand feeding, will that disrupt her development? we unswaddle her to try to get her to wake "naturally" but she generally then starts to cry... i feel so bad for her at times when we do that.

Hey you should be happy that yours stays awake mostly during the day a nd do hope he/she sleeps at night. I have a 1 1/2 month old boy who hardly stays awake during the day only wakes up to feed and sleeps. At night when he has his feed at 10pm he stays awake till 2-3am in the morning then he sleeps till 6am. Anyone with advice on this is realy welcomed.

HELP HELP HELP!!!

oh Jey, i honestly feel for you, cos its the same case as my daughter. her first feed is 7am and she will just sleep and sleep, the whole day. so i now wake her up every four hours for a feed, if not, I will be feeding her all nite long which happened last month (she is now 11weeks). but now she sleeps so much during day and only start to be wakeful around 6 after bath and then she will sleep again after this feed. so after the last feed at 10.30, her eyes are so wide opened and would stay awake until 2-3am ....i think this is reli killing me cos i never get more than 6 hours (even broken into several intervals) sleep since she is born
