CX Business class with toddler

Dear mums,

Sorry if this has been asked before - anyone flown with a toddler (own seat, 2 years old) in the new CX business class? Travel agent told me "it is not suitable seat configuraiton for travelling with children".
Could anyone share their experience / views? Thanks!
 
Just flew to the states and back in the new CX business class with a 2 year old and 4 month old. We thought it was fine but it is a bit difficult to keep an eye on your kid during take-off and landing. They were nice enough to let our two-year-old sit on our laps during take-off/landing which made a BIG difference. Once we were in the air I just put my child in his own seat, put on his headphones, turned on the tv and gave him some snacks. Even though he couldn't see us he was fine and eventually fell asleep. When he did fall asleep I just made his chair completely flat and tucked the duvet around him and he slept about 5/6 hours or so. I slept while he slept and when he woke up he looked over the divider at me and woke me up. So, overall we really enjoyed it and would definitely do it again.
 
Hi I just went to Canada in Cathay Pacific new Business Class flat beds, (not with children, but I can say that the new seats are much different and that they are very private and on an angle, so you wont be able to see your child if they are sitting beside you. Better if they are sitting across from you, you can see them better. Other than that you will be ok :)
 
Thanks for responses so far - good tip on having the child across and asking to put her on our knees during take off. I will cross check with Cathay whether this is possible routinely - she just turned 2, so I am a little nervous with her sitting alone.

i have flown cathay business and have seen parents with kids who did just fine. but i decided to fly continental business so i could sit next to my daughter and we could see each other the whole time (the seats are side by side). i think it depends on the personality of your child, i was worried she would not do well if she couldn't see me, and i also liked having the extra room in front of the seats so we had some room to play other than in the aisle. but the ability to sleep is better on cathay, the seats lay flat. the seats on continental do not go all the way down, only about 3/4 of the way down. so she was not quite as comfortable, but she ended up sleeping about 9 hours of our 16 hour flight. i prefer the service on cathay, but for my child side by side seats was the better choice.

Is Continental's business class nice and new? How is the TV selection (especially cartoons and such)? We are trying to figure out our travel choices as well...

I'm concerned about the safety side of things. If you can't see your child, you can't ensure they are in a seatbelt (and we all know what 2 year olds can do!). Also, if there is an emergency, how can you reach over and put the oxygen mask on them?

Luckily, we mainly travel to Perth where they still have the 'old' style configuration, which is much better.
 
Thanks for additional comments, especially security consideration. After discussion with my hubby we decided to fly BA instead. Perhaps we will come back to great CX service when she is a bit older.

we didn't watch any of the movies/cartoons on the continental flight, so i am not sure what their selection is (maybe they have it online?). i brought a portable dvd player with some movies she likes. the plane was new and the seats seemed new as well, they just don't recline the whole way. i would not hesitate to fly them again with my daughter. you get a lot more room with side by side seats, and on a 16 hour flight i opt for the room over the flat seats.

i flew on CX business class with my 13mth old to sydney and it worked out fine. we took the night flight and my baby slept about 5hrs so it was good. the fact that the seats were flat and roomy meant that he could twist and turn. i of course had him on my lap for take off and landing.
 
hi, i'll also be flying cx's new business class back to canada this summer & my baby will be ~9 months then. i didn't buy a seat for her because i think she's too young to have her own seat. just wondering, for the take off & landing, will i just hold her on my lap? is there any type of special seat belts for infants? what about when they are sleeping? do they have to be strapped up? i'm thinking whether/not to buy the travel flight vest as well. thanks
 
Fingerscrossed, did you buy a seat for your 13 month old, or have him/her share with you? I know you don't need to buy them a seat until 2yo, so wondering whether to buy one anyway for my 14 month old. I'm flying to canada and thought it would be good to be able to put him down to sleep in his own seat. Does anyone know if the airlines allow this for babies under 2?

yes, you can buy a seat for an infant, you pay the child's fare.

i bought 3 economy seats back to canada when my eldest was 2 and my youngest was 5 weeks.

you're lucky, i couldn't even contemplate business class....that's a lot of moola!
 
We flew BA to the UK back in December and booked a seat for our then 15 month old. If they are under 2 (I think) then they have to go in a car seat. We took our D's car seat and fixed it in to the airline chair and she slept in that. You do have to hold them for take off and landing and in turbulence you may have to take baby out of the car seat but it is down to the Captain's discretion on that flight. Hope this helps!
 
i did NOT have a car seat for my daughter. they do NOT have to go in one as most children under two are held the entire trip by parents.

besides, if the baby is in a carseat, would it not be safer for the baby to be strapped in during turbulence? just like everyone else? that makes no sense. (not that i don't believe you, but if it were the case, then safety must not be their main concern)
 
Carang - I don't make the rules!! Have just looked at the BA website to double check and that is what it says - I presume it is safer for the child during take off, landing and turbulence to be sat on an adults lap due to the brace position if it were needed. And most airlines say you can travel with a baby car seat as long as it has a 5 point harness.
 
i wasn't saying you were... relax... i just said it didn't make any sense to me is all.

also, it is not required that you have a car seat, merely that if you have one, then....
 
as i said, i took my 2 year old and my 5 week old... no car seat.

i also flew to australia with my 3.5 yr old and my 1.5 yr old... no car seat.
 
sorry, let me clarify... different airlines may have different policies as well.

i flew northwest for the first trip and virgin for the second.
