Cot vs. cotbed - which is more practical?

To experienced moms,

I am trying to buy a cot or cotbed for my first baby. I was thinking about getting a cotbed coz it lasts longer, but most of my friends with kids told me that a cot is more practical in reality as a cotbed isn't that big, and you really don't know whether your kids will want to sleep on a cotbed 3 years from now. What's your experience? Thanks in advance!!!

More practical yes. Unless you plan on a second baby soon (to reuse the cot), the cotbed means one less item of furniture to store/sell/replace etc. Cotbeds where the sides/rails come off totally and the ends can be changed to half height become just normal child beds so not sure if any 3 year old would be discerning enough to choose a proper child's bed...

Cotbeds would last until maybe 4-5 y/o and I found that having a cotbed made the transition from cot to bed easy i.e. toddler watch us take one side down first but leave bumpers in on the other side (so it is still her bed and familiar) and then later take that side rail down etc.

For us the cotbed was great.
I wanted my son out of a cot before my 2nd son needed it, so the cotbed was easy. At 18 mths, we took the sides off and had an instant big boy bed.
The transistion was easy, as it was the same familiar bed.
Even though it wasn't a problem for us, my concern had been that he wouldn't be ready and we'd be stuck with a new bed.
With a cotbed, we could have just put the sides back on and tried again later.

He spent a few months in the cotbed, then we bought a full size single and moved my 2nd son out of the moses basket and into the cot.
