Cost of Matilda & Private Ob/gyn

konradsmom - I hate to correct myself but my husband just told me that our bill was closer to $135,000. Though my ob/gyn was $55,000 of that which is expensive from what I can tell. Yes it would be considered emergency on a Sunday just for pricing reasons - I think it's $10,000 more. However the anesthesiologist, pediatrician and your ob/gyn are also likely to charge you a Sunday premium on top of that so best to find out from them in advance what it is! Good luck. Again the Matilda is worth it!

Thanks for the info - I think for me,it will be much more than 135,000 you had to pay, but am comforted by your opinion that its worth it. My Obs just told me that the Adventist has raised its prices and is now more expensive than Matilda, so probably the Matilda is the right choice after all. Thanks again. :)
 
I just had an elective c-section (booked one day in advance because the baby decided to change position at the last minute) at the Matilda, stayed 5 days in a private room and all up the cost was $94,000 so substantially less than some others are getting charged. I was under the care of Dr Dawkins and think he is great. The whole experience was fantastic, especially the level of care you get from everyone in the hospital. I never thought I'd be able to breastfeed but after a small hiccup post hospital stay I'm doing it and i credit it to the staff there. Call on them as much as you need.
 
No sorry, that was the delivery and hospital stay only. I was only here for the last few months of my pregnancy so i only spent another 3000 on doctors visits. It was also my second pregnancy and everything went well so all up i probably only saw an obstetrician (in Sydney and here) 6 times from beginning to end! Dawkins is very relaxed so even at the end I was only going in every two to three weeks.

This was a much cheaper pregnancy than the first and a much better experience too.

Who did you see in Sydney? I just would like a comparison of experience... I had Dr. Gil Burton from North Shore Private. And he was superb. We are planning to have our second one in Hong Kong and would like to know if Dr. Dawkins compares well to the Obgyn in Oz.

I saw Dr Alan Kaye at Prince of Wales Private. Kaye and Dawkins are very similar in approach. Very pro vaginal birth, very relaxed. As a hospital however the Prince of Wales can't compare with the Matilda where the staff are actually caring and have a predictable roster so you see the same people over a few days. In POW it was like a never ending assortment of backpackers coming through and it's supposed to be right behind North Shore as far as the hospitals go! I ended up having to go back to the Matilda a couple of nights ago to get treated for mastitis and I got a bit teary. I wished I could check back in...
 
Thanks Aussiegal! You've made me a little more certain about having a bub here in HK. North Shore Private was like checking into a hotel. So... I guess, I'd get a similar treatment at the Matilda.
 
Yep, it's just like a hotel only the food is better than most hotels in room dining menus... Enjoy it!

How many months to go?
 
Hahaha! All nine? We are currently finalising our research before deciding to have a second one here or not. I guess after what you've said we will definitely be having one here in HK.... i don't really have any real reason not to.
 
Public antenatal / private delivery?

Hi All,
I have very similar questions to Jane892's below. Is it possible to go for public antenatal care and then deliver at a private hospital? To be registered at a private hospital through a private doctor, does this mean I need to visit a private doctor at least once? Or do I need to do X number of visits with a private doctor before I can deliver at a private hospital? How do I go about getting public antenatal care? I'm thinking of QMH - is there a number to call to fix an appt? Any advice would be much appreciated!

- Private antenatal (either Dr Phillip Ho or Dr Dawkins). I like the fact that Dr Dawkins is Australian but his consultations are $950 a pop and Dr Ho $800 a pop....does anyone know both docs and would highly recommend one over the other?
- Also...Dr Phillips office has already made a booking at Matilda for me (before I found out how expensive it is!). If I now change to Dr Dawkins am I able to still keep my booking at Matilda that Dr Ho's office made for me?
- If down the track I choose to keep going private for antenatal but then actually deliver at the Queen Mary will the private doc be angry that i'm canceling my Matilda booking
- How do I actually book at the Queen Mary...? Just ring up and say I'm having a baby?
- After reading all these posts about all the hospitals being full etc will I even get a place at Queen Mary (if not I better keep my booking at Matilda and just cough up the cash!).
Anyway..I'm meeting up with some great girls from these boards with great advice...so I'm learning more each day!

PS. Apparently it's also normal to turn up to your new apartment on "hand over day" and find it has completely not been cleaned (filthy) and your landlord is "uncontactable"...ohh the joys of HK!..sorry off the subject!

I just delivered at the Matilda and just got home today. I had a emergency c-section and I stayed in a standard room.

My total cost was HK$90K.

Hi - if you google Queen Mary Hospital you will get the contact details to register for antenatal care. You need to fax them proof of address, id cards, and a letter of referral from your private doctor - if you phone them they will explain. Sometimes the English is not so great, so you just have to persist. If you want to use the private hospital to deliver then you will need a private doctor who can get you a place. Sounds like you need to just speak to a few and see if they can help you with this, you'll need to be referred by a private doctor to the public hospital anyway.
