Cost of antenatal care and delivery in HK?

My husband just received an offer for transfer to HK. The job will provide medical insurance but exclude all costs related to pregnancy and delivery. Could anyone please provide some rough guide as to how much does it actually cost to go through pregnancy and delivery in Hong Kong if you are paying out of pocket?

I am after a professional knowledgeable obst and a private hospital - I heard Matilda was good.

And, when would I need to book? I am in my 8th week now.

Thanks!

We also had no maternity insurance. We chose to go with a private OB/GYN for antenatal care but were undecided about whether to go public or private for delivery. The antenatal care came as a package at $15000 with Lucy Lord (or Grance Cheung). This included everything expect specialist scans (scans during regular constulation are free) and extra blood tests (iron, Glucose tolerence test etc). We actually booked an elective C-section at Matilda but were hoping for a chance of a natural delivery. Baby complied (a little too fast - born at home!) and the ambulance took us to Queen Mary. Have to say that Queen Mary was a great experience - not luxury but at a total cost of $200 there are definitely no complaints! Baby is still in the special care unit (waiting to finish a course of anti-biotics) so will know his bill in the next day or two. Not expecting it to be more than $500. I have several friends who have used both the private and public system and they all say that the more relaxed experience of the private system does not justify the cost. Add to this the fact that baby had to stay in hospital for a few extra days our total bill (including antenatal care) would have been in the region of $150000 (based on the experience of friends). I hope this doesn't just add to your confusion!

Hi brightstar

Firstly congrats on your pregnancy!

I understand that your specialist can book you into Matilda at 9 weeks provided they have all the evidence and scans to prove you are pregnant. It is all set out on the Matilda website and you have to pay a rather hefty deposit too (something new that I didn't need when I had my baby 14 months ago). It would seem that most people are put on a wait list first which is a little stressful. Agree with rani that you should move quickly if you want to go to Matilda.

I went to Matilda for my delivery 14 months ago and went to a private specialist for the antenatal visits beforehand. The price list which rani sent will be more accurate for specialist costs as my specialist, Dr Dawkins, has now left HK. My bill for the delivery including epidural, doctors fee and Matilda costs was about HK$100K. My antenatal visits (maybe 11 or so visits in the 9 months) were on top of that at about HK$950 ish for most visits and the visits with full on scans (12 weeks and 20 weeks) were more like HK$2K each.

Hope that gives you some idea.

If you do not have medical insurance and are paying all this yourself then you need to be aware of the cost implications if there are complications and you stay at Matilda (often with complications, you and/or the baby are sent to the public hospitals like Queen Mary). I have heard of the delivery costs being as high as HK$250K just for the hospital and doctors etc where there were complications from an emergency c-section.

Just some things to think about. I have heard all good things about the public hospitals in terms of skill of the doctors etc even if it is not the same comfort level as the private hospitals. If we did not have insurance for my pregnancy I would have paid for private antenatal visits out of our own pocket and then gone to Queen Mary for the delivery.

Take care and best wishes for your pregnancy and move to HK.
