Has anyone ever experienced this? I called my OBGYN (currently 6 months prego) with flu like symptoms. He prescribed 2 medications and then told me that if it continued that I should contact my General practitioner. After 2 weeks with a never ending cough, I called my GP and she prescribed something that was not 100% safe for baby, even though she knew i was pregnant. (found out after the fact) I spoke with my OBGYN and he is still suggesting I see my GP. I have always trusted my GP and I dont hold her responsible for prescribing something to me that was not 100 safe. Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldnt my OBGYN be looking after me and my health until I deliver the baby. Anyone have any thoughts? Is this not common procedure in Hong Kong? Confused

I had skin problem when I carry my first baby. I then had hyperthyriodism when I carry my second. Both time I reported to my OBG and were send to specialist for treatment.
I don't know whether this is a common practise in HK and I also find I bit shock when he send me to a dermatologist. But I guess he think I will have a better care with them.

I called my doctor with the medication recommendations I was given elsewhere and he confirmed if they were safe or not before I took any medication. In my case, one was a pain medication for dental surgery and another was a topical cream for some skin problems. The pain medication was not safe but the OB gave me another; the topical cream was perfectly fine.

If it wasn't so simple in my case, I think I may have suggested they speak to each other. Is that an option? I know it's scary. Also, a great website is www.safefetus.com . Look up your medication and it will say what exactly the risks are. Bear in mind that ALL medications have some risk, even panadol, but it might help in the future as long as you don't expect something to have no risk whatsoever.

one last thing to remember regarding medication is that sometimes a medication has some risk, but the potential benefit to you (and often secondarily your baby, especially in the case of something respiratory, which could mean oxygen level compromise) may outweigh this risk.

Hi....an obstertrican is specialised in pregnancy and delivering babies....not flu and so it only makes sense for you to be referred to a GP or other specialist.

I had gastrointeritus and flu with my first pregnancy and both times was referred to a specialist GP by my obstetrician- it was someone my obstetrician knew.
They were in contact with each other throughout my illnesses and both knew exactly what the other recommended.

Hi Asalles, I also came down with a bad flu during my pregnancy and asked my OB about it - and he told me that I could either go see my GP or he could recommend a specialist if I was really concerned! He said he didn't stock flu medicine so he couldn't even give me anything. In fact he was kind of abrupt about it and I felt rather offended at the time - but I guess this is just the practice of OBs in HK. They don't seem to have a lot of time to entertain any "non-pertinent" requests or comments from patients!

I think the thing is that Doctors in HK are very cautious.....and this is no bad thing, HK has one of the lowest maternal and infant death rates at birth in the world....and so they don't like to take responsibility for you if they feel they are not specialised enough.

Hence an OB will refer you to a GP or specialist if you come down with something non pregnancy related.

My OB was great when I had the flu when pregnant and made sure the specialist sent him all details of my illness etc. I was eventually admitted to hospital with the flu, and the specialist wouldn't give me any medication until he had first checked it with my OB.
