Confinement Nanny

Hi!

I'm a Singaporean Chinese and will be expecting my baby mid May 2004.

As I'm here with my husband, with no family or friends, I'm looking for help the month after my delivery.

I'm looking for a nanny who can cook and clean the baby for me in May/June. Or is there any confinement food delivery services available?

As we do not have space for a live in helper, I would like to engage a 9-6, 6 days a week nanny, who prefereably specialises in confinement services.

I've been searching the entire WWW but can't find any recommendations in HK.

I live in Shatin, New Territories, and would appreciate any recommendations. Hopefully not too pricey.

PS. This is my first child and being here alone, a little lost. Most of the ante natal classes are in Cantonese and the ones in English are in HK Island and i hate the travelling. Are there any good English DVDs i can buy regarding the labour process and caring for the baby?

I had a "tutorial" before I gave birth, with a midwife who came to my home. She also lent me a tape (she's retired now)

Mrs. Chee has excellent English (I think she worked in the UK for several years) and since she's also Chinese, she might also have contacts for confinement nannies.

You might also want to check if some of the Kln-side hospitals have prenatal classes in English - Maybe Queen Elizabeth or Prince of Wales?

Would you want someone from Malaysia? Should be cheaper. I went back to Malaysia to deliver my babies. The nannies worked 24 hours and I had good rest after my ceasarean sections.

Thanks. I've spoken to Mrs Chee. She doesn't know of any confinement ladies and she holds her classes in Wan Chai, and i don't quite enjoy the travelling. She has mentioned the tape but we do not have any tape player. I would like my husband to attend the classes but he's working overtime almost everyday so i was thinking of watching a DVD together instead.

I certainly don't mind a Malaysian nanny, or any other nationalities. However, i prefer a live out nanny as we do not have much walking space in the 300+ sq ft flat we live in. I appreciate all recommendations and will contact the Malaysian nannies if you could provide me with the numbers.

You should also try Annerley Midwives and Rent-A-Mum. I've used Rent-A-Mum previously and would recommend them for locating a short term nanny - nannies in HK don't come cheap.


Also Yvonne Heavyside offers 'Baby Basics' courses at home for first time parents (and second if you've forgotten everything) which my husband did before our daughter was born.

Both Annerley Midwives and Yvonne Heavyside are listed on the web-site.
 
A midwife came to my place and gave me a "crash course" in baby delivery, and breast feeding techniques. It was quite useful!

You might also try posting your question about confinement ladies on the Chinese language web forum www.baby-kingdom.com

On the left-hand column, choose the "chan qian, chan hou" (before the birth, after the birth) section.

It's a very active board and although most of the women post and reply in Chinese, I have seen some postings and replies in English.
