Concerns about Vaccinations and their risks

Hello, i am a first time mom due in the next few weeks and concerned about the whole issue of vaccinations and their associated risks.

I have been reading Dr Sears 'The Vaccine Book', and discovered that levels of aluminum and thimerosal may be too high when giving babies vaccinations, epecially the number of vaccinations given at a time. The issue for me is not whether to vaccinate, as i think this is necessary, but whether to space out the vaccinations that are considered risky in terms of the levels of aluminum, themerosal and the risk of developmental problems like autism etc...

My question is has anyone else got this worry and has anyone actually tried to space out the vaccinations or considering doing this? Any thoughts on this and on which paediatrition is most agreeable/easy to discuss these options with?

According the Dr Sears the levels of aluminum in vaccines may be too high if given together in the format suggested by the American Academy of Pediatrics and he suggests an alternative which is to limit the ones given with aluminum/themerosal to one at a time, so that levels are not reaching toxic. Also suggests asking for brands that contain less or none of these chemicals when you do get them.

I have not read the book, but i will say that as far as I know thimeresol has been removed from all vaccines due to consumer requests. The decision to separate vaccines is up to you, but studies have shown that there is no correlation between autism rates and vaccination. Since thimersol was removed, autism rates in the US have continued to climb at the same rate. That said, it is quite a controversial issue and people tend to feel strongly about it when it is a concern for them. Seperating the vaccines can cause no harm other than a couple of more injections for your child (they don't need to be together to function in their desired way) so if you are concerned you may wish to ask for that. Obviously it's not pleasant but if it calms your fears it may be worthwhile. I know there are threads on here regarding separate MMR vaccines and where they are available, as well as threads regarding alternative immunization schedules, try searching for MMR?

thanks Rebekah, spoke to Dr Thondup and he reckons there is no risk of aluminium and most of the vaccines don't contain thimerosol. Since i am only concerned with the first few for the time being i guess it's ok will have to do more research for the MMR though.

The Doctor who claimed the MMR vaccine caused autism in children is currently on medical trial in the UK for his inaccurate and 'immoral' research techniques.

His studies have since been largely disproven I believe.

But as a consequence of his 'faulty' research, measles, for example, is on the rise again in Europe as not enough children are vaccinated against it.

I agree, but that is why some people are suggesting separating the three components. In this way, more children still get vaccinated against all 3, just not at the same time.

I have been told that the 3 separate shots for the MMR are no longer available in HK.

Has anyone gotten the separate shots recently, and if so which doctor please?

And do most people not delay and just get the combined MMR at the 12 month or 15 month visit?

not sure who does but our daughter accidently got the MMR (and the chicken pox vaccine ) 2x - once in the US and once in HK....neither set of drs seemed remotely concerned

We struggled to find the MMR in separate doses. As far as I know the only place to get it now is at OT&P. We go to the one in Clearwater Bay but I think they have other clinics on the island.

I called OT&P and they claim they havent had the separate shots in over 1 year, and doubt they will get it in stock. :(
