concerns about Bisphenol A (BPA) found in baby bottles

Does anyone know if there are any viable alternatives to the plastic baby bottles found in most shops in Hong Kong?

Has anyone tried using glass bottles and if so where are they available? I recently purchased an Avent steam electric steriliser which has a few bottles with it but after reading the article today about plastic bottles and the links with cancer i am considering the alternatives.

Would really appreciate any feedback from people who have tried other bottles and if glass bottles are safe to use. Also what steriliser would you use for glass bottles? Thanks!
 
There are some old threads on this forum regarding this. You can switch to glass bottles or purchase BPA-free bottles.
 
I bought Bfree (Glass) Bottles from Bumps2babes in Central last week. They also have the anti-colic system inside them.
 
I also read the news about BPA, I knew it was bad but didn't realise that it can cause cancer too!

I have both the glass bottles (Bfree) and also the Adiri bottles.

I find that the glass bottles are a bit of a hassle as they are really heavy when I want to go out with it, and also when my baby knocks it off the table, I am always worried that it will crack or break! But yes, you can use the sterilisers with glass bottles as well.

For the adiri, it's much more convenient as it is light and only has 3 parts, the lid, the bottle and the cover, and has all the anti colic, etc. built in too.

I prefer using the Adiris as they are much lighter to carry around (as I tend to go out a lot). Hope that helps
 
Thanks for all your help! I did find out that bumps to babes have the born free bottles but as they are glass i was a bit hesitant about whether they would break and also how to sterilise and what to use to sterilise them. The born free website has a BPA free steriliser but they don't stock it in HK. Also the Adiri brand doesn't have a steriliser on their website. I recently purchased an Avent steam steriliser which comes with two bottles and would like to return it if i find another option.
 
I know that you asked for alternatives to plastic bottles, but there are plastic bottles which are free of bisphenol A. Besides glass bottles, Bfree also have plastic bottles which are bisphenol A free. I bought mine from Bumps to Babes.
 
You don't need the same brand of sterilizer to sterilize the bottles. Most of the bottles fit into any standard size sterilizer.
 
By the way, if you are worried about BPA in the sterilisers, you can always just boil the bottles like the good old days :)
 
Thanks! i think i will just sterilise them the good old fashioned way as its the safest! Might hold on to my avent steriliser just in case though! Will make another trip to bumps soon for the born free bottles
 
BPA free baby products cheat sheet

A few months ago when I was researching this subject, I came across this useful website. I have myself resorted to old fashioned glass bottles for home use from BFree and BFree plastic ones for use on the go. Both at Bumps to Babes.

I am now also very careful with resuing plastic bottles after say Evian or other mineral water, and same applies to plastic storage containers for food, and cling wrap which touches on the food in the fridge. There has been a lot of research over the pas few years, and I am glad it finally comes to Hong Kong as poeple here mostly unaware. California seems to be ahead of the game when it comes to legislating it, despite a very strong plastics industry lobby telling us it is all safe!

Just to let everyone know, they've recalled a bunch of plastic bottles with BPA in Canada. This website was very helpful to me to find BPA free bottles. It seems Medela is BPA free as well.
 
I realised according to Z report that Bfree and Born free are not the same thing. I'm concerned about colic. The Born free bottles don't seem to have the vent mechanism like Dr. Brown/Bfree bottles (based on images on line.) Does anyone know if Born free bottles have an anti-colic mechanism? I'm debating between purchasing MAM bottles (that have a similar vent) and Born free bottles for this reason. Any input would be very helpful.
 
Saira - Why don't you switch your baby to the Bfree bottles? I was really pleased to find the Bfree bottles have the vent mechanism, are plastic and are BPA-free as my LO was used to drinking from Dr Brown's. My LO had no problem adjusting from Dr Brown's to Bfree. The only problem you might have is that I was at Bumps to Babes recently and saw that there were no Bfree bottles on the shelves. It might be worth giving them a call to see when they will re-stock.
 
My daughter has been using the MAM bottles since birth (she is now 10 months old) and she loves them. I once switched to Nuk and Chu Chu bottles (with the cross teats) but she didn't like these at all so we reverted back to MAM. I'm not sure whether MAM bottles helps with colic as my daughter has alwasy been a crying baby (until 100 days from birth when it miraculously stopped for reasons we cannot fathom).
The only problem I find with these are that you're supposed to unscrew the bottom parts and the plastic ring when washing and sterilising the bottles. When you screw them back on (both the bottom part and the teat), you have to make sure that you have screwed on properly, otherwise, it will leak milk all over your baby. This has happened to me once or twice in the beginning but once you get the hang of it, it's quite easy. They are also priced quite reaonsably, at aroudn $50 per bottle, not the outrageously $100 charged for some of the other brands.
As they're plastic and quite light, my daughter has been holding her own bottle when drinking milk since she's eight-nine months old so we're very pleased. This would not have been possible if we were using glass bottles.
 
Also, does anyone know which pacifiers are BPA free? I usually sterilize these as well (we use the Nuk pacifiers) and am concerned that these contain BPA and pose a health risk.
 
My issue with Bfree is that its unclear whether all parts are BPA free or just the bottle. The company is not great with disclosure on their products so I'm not completely confident about the bottles.

Query: Thanks for your opinion on MAM. I found it helpful. May I ask where you bought the MAM bottles? Are they available locally?
 
Just another quick note- I would like to buy the Born Free bottles but I'm unsure if it has any good anti-colic features. Dr. Brown worked really well for my newborn. If anyone has experience with the Born Free brand, please share.
 
How universal are the glass bottles with pumps? I have an Avent hand pump but want to use glass bottles. Will the BFree glass bottles fit the hand pump? I was told the Nuk glass bottle necks are too narrow for the Avent pumps but since the BFree are out of stock, I couldn't look at them to even guess. If anyone knows, I'd be grateful for the info.
