coming off the pill

hi,

am thinking of going off the pill now to help me lose weight as well as in preparation for starting to try and get pregnant 9-12 months from now.

Is there any reason why I can't just stop taking the pill? should i speak to my doctor first. Do i need to come off the pill in a specific way?

sorry if this is a dumb question.

thanks, ct1

I just went 'cold turkey' both times I stopped taking the pill (to get pregnant). Word of warning - if your periods are irregular your best opportunity to get pregnant is the first month off the pill, while your body is still used to being in the 28 day cycle mode.

My doctor told me to just stop taking the pill after my cycle had finished. He also recommended that I take folic acid immediately as latest research is saying it is a huge benefit.

Beware, I came off the pill thinking that it would take me at least 6-12 months to conceive and I got pregnant in the first month  My husband was in shock for quite some time!!

Good luck xxx

I also came off the pill believing we had anywhere up to a year before getting pregnant- but it didn't take long, second month of trying!

I just stopped taking it.

While there does seem to be a a fair bit of evidence for the first cycle coming off of the pill to be a 'hyper one' for falling pregnant, {proof posted above!!} I think you are doing the right thing coming off of the pill early.

I have heard far more stories about the pill really screwing up peoples cycle, than 'success with the first cycle' stories, and wish I'd taken the time before actively starting TTC to get it 'out of my system'. I have long / irregular cycles and it took me 14 months to fall pregnant. I really wish, I'd come off of the pill 6 months earlier.

Anyway, to answer your question, it is fine to just finish the month you are on, when ready to stop taking the pill and then just stop using it.

Hi!

I've also just stopped taking the pill after my period was finished. It's been two months now and I did not really feel anything different. Did not go to a doctor either. I wanted to give my body some time off the pill before getting pregnant.

We're planning to start trying in a couple months, so we're back to the condom now...

Yo8u can go off the pill anytime, you don't need your doctors okay for that, but it can mess up your cycles until alll the hormaones are gone. When I went off I had one really short cycle, then one normal length, then one really long cycle, and then they were all normal length after that. I was off the pill for awhile before I tried getting pregnant, and then when we did try it was my 9th cycle that I finally got pregnant.

I will be coming off the pill in exactly one week's time and so after my 'withdrawl bleed' has finished, my husband and I are going to start trying for a baby straight away.

However, due to travel reasons last month I did not have a 'fake period'. Instead I just continued on with the next packet, and skipped the sugar pills. I never do this and I think the last and only time I did this was about 6 or 7 years ago.

Can anyone tell me, would skipping my 'fake period' and taking 2 packets in a row, have any negative affects on my cycle? Afterall, I thought the pill gave you a fake period anyway, so once I stop, I would hope my cycle returns to normal shortly after. Being on the pill has always given me a 28 day cycle, but by skipping a 'fake period' and continuing on with the next packet of pills straight away, would it have changed the days on my cycle?

So confused!

Can anyone give me advice on this?

I have been taking the pill for 6 years

I used to skip the sugar pills all the time, for months at a time, until I would have break thru bleeding, then I would have my "fake" period, then skip them for a while again. The pills are a completely artificail cycle where you do not ovulate, so whether or not you skip your fake period has no consequence, the hormones still need work there way out of your body, and then you will ahve normal cycles. Some people get pregant right away, for others they don't. The book" taking charge of your fetility" is very good at learning your body's signals of ovulation and how to optimize your chances of getting pregnant.

I was off the pill for six months when I got pregnant with my first child. We were travelling for 3 months and then looking for work so this may explain why it took "so" long. I had been on the pill for 10 years. Second time didn't even take a month and we are expecting baby number two. Doctor says that the first month is common for pregnancy bacause of the all the hormones your body has back! Didn't consult anyone either time when I stoped. Good luck

I am currently thinking of coming off the pill...I was just making sure that I can do it without going to the doctors? Its seems as though that is the general opinion...which is good because I hate going to the doctors!

yeah no need to go to doc unless you want a checkup - sometimes a good idea as a preconception thing just general blood tests etc but uneccessary. i was also lucky enough to get pregnant within a couple of months after coming off the pill and it was really the first month we properly tried as i had been away for work and moving etc. i had been on the pill for14 years without a break.
